Today we’d like to introduce you to PK Iman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m originally from Iran (PK stands for Persian King to show love to where I come from), but I moved to Atlanta when I was around 5 years old. The first time I was really introduced to hip-hop was in 5th grade, and it was to bedrock by Young Money. Through that, I started diving a lot deeper into rap. The first two artists that I listened to heavily were Lil Wayne and Eminem. Those two artists really shaped my early knowledge of music in general. As I got older and went to high school, I started to rap and just freestyle for fun. I also started learning a lot more about old school and 90’s hip-hop. I was introduced to artists like Nas, Biggie, Dr. Dre, and a lot more. In high school, that was when Kendrick Lamar dropped his classic Good Kid, M.A.A.D City album. I listened to that album from start to finish, and it gave me a whole new appreciation for the creation of music and albums. Because of that album, I always will now play an album from first to last like the artist intended it to be. Fast forward to college, and I was then introduced to artists like Juice Wrld, XXXTentacion, Lil Durk, and a lot of the newer younger artists. I went from listening to old school hip-hop/rap to now listening to more of the new school artists. At this time too, I started to record myself making music, and I created a group with my friends called Life (with a backwards F). It was supposed to signify that life has its ups and downs, and that’s what we always tried to portray in our music. We wanted to create music for every feeling that you feel, so no matter if you’re happy, sad, angry, mad, or anything else, you’ll always know you’re not alone. Originally, I was recording myself in my closet under my clothes, just sitting down. Eventually, I saved the money to start going to a studio with my friend, and once I got my music professionally mixed, I knew there was no going back to recording in my closet. I started to book multiple studio sessions a month, and through that, I started learning my voice. One year, I actually started dropping a song every 2 weeks. Originally, I had no plans on dropping an album until the moment felt right. I mainly just dropped singles. But in late 2022, I went through a major ACL surgery and a breakup that pushed me to create my first album, “I TRIED LOVING…” All of the next year in 2023, I spent my time writing music, and because I had had ACL surgery and even had to get a second surgery in mid-2023, all I had was time to write and record. That album was my form of journaling; it was my way of letting out everything that needed to be let out. I also created that album for anyone that was going through the same thing. Just like my earlier days, I wanted the album to allow anyone going through a tough time to know they aren’t alone. After the album came out, it had some of my biggest songs on there: PRETTY LITTLE LIES (Ft. Zae France), STRANGERS, NEED YOU (FT. Official & Info Black), and DRIFTIN’ AWAY (ft. Sy Ari Da Kid). After I released the album and I was able to close that chapter in my story, I decided I wanted to get back just having fun with my artistry and trying out new things. The album overall was a more dark melodic Rap and R&B album. After the album, I didn’t want to be known for just making the sad heartbreak music, so I went back into making fun music, motivational music, and gym influence music. Now where I am in life, I realized I don’t like being tied down in my artistry at all. I want to be able to make all types of music because that’s what I listen to. And just like when I started, I want to make music that people can listen to in any season of their life that they are in. Whether they are happy, sad, angry, mad, or anything. That’s all part of life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. There have been multiple times during the journey where I’ve doubted myself. Moments when I feel like quitting, but music is just in me. Music has had people look at me and think I’m crazy and even, , de, me miss out on certain events. I’ve had people doubt me and even question if what I’m doing is worth it. But this is my therapy, and this is how I get everything out. So it hasn’t been smooth, but because of the struggles I’ve dealt with and have overcome from lack of confidence to internal battles that I deal with, I can speak on these topics and show others that go through these same things that they’re not alone and they’re not a problem and they should never feel like they are.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist. I mainly do Hip Hop/Rap mixed with a little bit of R&B and Pop. I think I’m mainly known for my creativity and being very multifaceted. I’m most proud of the fact that I realize that I’m a student in music and I’m always open to learning from others, especially when they have more experience with something than me. Most people can’t take advice from anyone but me. I’m always open to advice that’ll make my craft better. What sets me apart is that I’m not scared to really show my emotions or my vulnerability, whereas nowadays if you do, you’re looked at like you’re weak, which isn’t the case. In reality, you’re actually strong for doing something that some people would shun you for.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
There are so many different layers to success. For me, success is being able to make sure my mom is happy and the family is okay. My mom sacrificed so much to get me to the place I’m at now, and for me, I’ll feel like I achieved success when she can sit back and not have to worry about anything. Just relax and enjoy the fruits of her labor.
