Hidden Gems: Meet Maria McCoy of Safe Spaces Georgia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria McCoy.

Maria, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was a teenager living in Florida, a local service similar to Safe Spaces Georgia was located in my home town. I always appreciated that there was a place families could go for this type of support. Since that time, I have dreamed of being able to open my own center.
Later on, after obtaining my law license, I began working in juvenile and family law. As part of the legal field, I had a front row seat to the struggles families face trying to find adequate resources. In particular, my client was ordered to supervised visitation and because there was no service near her that performed supervised visits, she was relegated to one hour visits at the park with a police officer supervising. I thought to myself, “we can do better than this.” So, armed with just a vision and one friend willing to help- I opened Safe Spaces. Now we have a center located in Griffin, Georgia that has two playroom, a kitchen, and bathrooms. We also supervise in home and in the community. We attend court hearings and give testimony as needed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been relatively smooth for me with the exception of scheduling. I have yet to find an easier method of scheduling because we take a hands on approach and allow clients the opportunity to speak to us directly. Understanding the needs of the community has helped guide us through this period of transition.

We’ve been impressed with Safe Spaces Georgia , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Safe Spaces addresses the need for comprehensive solutions beyond limited park visits with police officers. Offering in-home, overnight, and multi-location supervision, Safe Spaces understands the importance of flexibility and tailored support. With our expertise and commitment to representing mothers, fathers, and children, Safe Spaces expanded its services to include CPR certifications, and parenting classes. As a trusted provider, and member of the Supervised Visitation Network, Safe Spaces serves as a valuable support system, bridging the gap between parents and court-ordered supervised visitation.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I think resilience is the most important quality to have as a business owner. Knowing that you believe in your business and what you can offer is important because there are times you will have to remind yourself of those two things just to keep going. Every set back propells you and it is up to you to determine which direction you proceed in.
