Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira Underwood.
Hi Kira, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up playing sports, including varsity volleyball, and continued playing intramural volleyball through my twenties. My dad was a chiropractor, so healthcare and movement were always part of my world. I was interested in physical therapy early on, but a college guidance counselor discouraged that path due to my grades at the time. Instead, I earned a bachelor’s degree in business and went into advertising, marketing, and sales.
While I learned valuable skills, the corporate world quickly felt misaligned with who I was and how I wanted to work. Around that time, my roommate was a massage therapist, which sparked my interest in hands-on, movement-based care. I made the decision to leave my corporate job and pursue massage therapy—and I loved it. Still, I felt there was more I wanted to learn and offer.
That led me to study exercise science and become a personal trainer. I started a private practice combining massage therapy and personal training, which deepened my understanding of the body and human movement. Over time, I realized I wanted to operate at the highest clinical level and have a greater impact on people’s long-term health. That’s when I decided to pursue my Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
I earned my DPT in 2017 and worked in a hospital setting in San Diego for several years before relocating to Atlanta. Eventually, I founded KRU Mobile PT, which had been a long-standing goal of mine. I wanted to create a practice that delivered exceptional, one-on-one care without insurance interference or time restrictions—allowing me to support clients from rehabilitation through lifelong strength, health, and wellness.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Changing careers was one of the hardest decisions I’ve made. Leaving a stable corporate job to pursue massage therapy was not immediately understood by family and friends, and at times that was discouraging. Financially, it wasn’t simple either—I wasn’t initially approved for student loans, which required me to enroll in a hybrid, extended program so I could continue working while going to school. Balancing work and school meant real sacrifice. I missed personal events, opportunities, and downtime, but I stayed committed because I believed in the path I was on.
Starting KRU Mobile PT has been a dream come true, but even that came with challenges. When my wife and I moved to Atlanta, we didn’t know a single person. Building a practice from scratch meant putting myself out there consistently, earning trust, and establishing a professional reputation one relationship at a time. That first year was especially difficult, but it was also incredibly formative.
Looking back, every challenge reinforced my resilience and clarified why this work matters to me. I would do it all over again without hesitation.
We’ve been impressed with KRU Mobile PT, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
KRU Mobile PT is a concierge, mobile physical therapy and wellness practice serving the northeast quadrant within the I-285 perimeter in metro Atlanta. I provide one-on-one, in-home care that blends physical therapy, strength training, and movement education to help people not only recover from injury, but build lasting capacity and confidence in their bodies.
What sets KRU Mobile PT apart is the absence of insurance restrictions. Without dictated visit limits or rushed appointments, I’m able to spend meaningful time with each client and deliver truly individualized care. Sessions are never double-booked, and clients work directly with a DPT from start to finish—no handoffs, no cookie-cutter programs.
I specialize in working with adults who want to stay strong, active, and independent as they age, particularly those who value strength training, functional movement, and long-term health over quick fixes. Many of my clients come to me after feeling frustrated by traditional models of care and are looking for a more empowering, education-driven approach.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built. KRU Mobile PT has grown almost entirely through word of mouth, which tells me that clients feel heard, supported, and genuinely cared for. The brand stands for autonomy, resilience, and high-quality care—meeting people where they are and helping them move forward with confidence.
What I want readers to know is that KRU Mobile PT isn’t just about rehabilitation—it’s about building a foundation for lifelong movement, strength, and wellness. My goal is for clients to feel capable in their bodies and supported in their journey long after our sessions end.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to anyone just starting out is to be patient and stay committed to your long-term vision. Progress often looks slower and messier than you expect, especially in the early stages, and comparison can be incredibly distracting. I wish I had known that consistency, relationship-building, and showing up with integrity matter far more than having everything perfectly figured out. Trust that small, intentional steps taken over time truly compound.
