Exploring Life & Business with Faraz Zubairi of ExamMed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Faraz Zubairi.

Hi Faraz, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
While I attribute the real start of my career to being at The Gap for many years during high school and college, I started my professional career working on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC and transitioning to a corporate law firm before helping start my first company 23 years ago. Since then I’ve had the privilege of being a founder, operator, investor and board member to a number of game changing companies, the latest of which is ExamMed.

And, on the note, the ExamMed platform actually began its humble journey as a Telehealth platform back in 2016. Working with our clients and the build team we quickly realized that a one of product would not be sufficient. We spent the next few years working closely with healthcare professionals to find out what they needed technology to do. We all learned together that the way technology is developed and delivered is actually detrimental to the US healthcare system. For each “problem solved” by a one off product 3 new problems were created. And, the build fast and break often technique that permeates the software development space does not translate effectively at all to healthcare. So, as ExamMed has grown we are building partnerships and developing technology built from the ground up for healthcare specifically. Not adapting business software to kind of work in patient care. So, ExamMed is designed to integrate directly into existing clinical workflows—enhancing, not disrupting, how care is delivered. By seamlessly combining remote patient monitoring, health monitoring devices, referral management, EMRs, administrative functions and population health as a whole, ExamMed empowers providers to offer more personalized, coordinated, and accessible care. All while keeping it incredibly easy for patients and providers alike.

But, company and leadership growth isn’t a single person effort. I got to where I am today through the enormous support of parents, family, and mentors who taught and still teach the power of impact, doing good, and being good! And I try to instill that in all I do and what we are doing at ExamMed.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never a smooth ride, but a journey is what we make it. Each challenge is an opportunity to learn, refine skills, take changes and above all else – teaches us to maintain focus.

One of our obstacles has also turned into validation.

Early on in our journey we had to overcome the stigma that technology can’t be good for clinical workflows. Patients were skeptical why a doctor wasn’t putting a stethoscope to their chest or it didn’t feel like a “real” appointment. How could my doctor see me from the screen? Doctors were hesitant because they were unsure if they would be reimbursed for the visits. Fortunately, we were able to demonstrate that virtual care can be just as easy as sending a text message.

Fast forward a decade. That patient based skepticism has transformed into a new hurdle. Due to the fragmentation driven by ever changing technology, providers have come to assume all new technological advancements come with a predefined set of headaches, bugs, inconsistencies and training requirements. Ultimately not improving the overall healthcare experience but simply shifting problems to a new location. They have learned that for every problem technology solves it adds three or four new ones that previously did not exist. Which, based on the mantra “build it fast and break it often” , brings a truckload of difficulty into a field that only flourishes with stability and consistency. This challenge validates what we have learned over the years and reinforces our drive how we grow as where we are driving the future of healthcare.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
ExamMed builds and drives award winning solutions designed specifically to address process needs and gaps in the Healthcare workspace. With a holistic approach to fixing broken processes not temporarily band-aiding specific problems ExamMed creates solutions that work on delivery.

What are your plans for the future?
Right now I am focused on changing the delivery of healthcare for the better where people have access to the right information at the right time to make the right care decisions for patients.

I am also mentoring more of our young professionals (high school, college) and entrepreneurs; increasing work with non-profits; cheering the Buffalo Bills go to a Super Bowl again and possibly way down the road, opening a sandwich shop!
