Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Daly.
Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Back when I was in nursing school in Chicago (over 20 years ago) I needed 2 more credit hours to be a full time college student. There was a class called “weight training” that I decided to try since I liked to exercise. This class made us do a basic circuit on some machines to earn a passing grade. There happened to be another area way in the back where I would hear metal clanging, men grunting and yelling and the men back there looked cut! I was interested so I went back there one day and met this really nice but swole guy that said he would gladly teach me the basics of weight lifting/nutrtion and that he did. Since that day I fell in love with lifting weights. I also went on to be a Registered Nurse and have been for over 20 years.
Fast forward to a little over 4 years ago my family moved from Chicago to Georgia. During the first year I didn’t work while we got settled so I stayed home with my 2 year old. I decided during that time off I wanted to be on the other side of healing. The preventative side and not the side that only took care of nursing people back to health in the hospital. I decided to become a Certified Fitness Coach with ISSA so I can now helpi others become the best version of themselves through health wellness and fitness. So now I go by Coach Christina and I coach people virtually with health and nutrition.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not a smooth road at all. I’m trying to build a business while simultaneously still having a regular job, a small child, and a husband. Things sometimes move slower then I would like because the time I have to dedicate to my success is limited due to life obligations. Therefore, taking clients require me to sacrifice my already “stretched thin” capacity and ultimately coaching in small batches at a time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I became a Registered Nurse 22 years ago where I worked in a level 1 trauma center that serviced the south side of Chicago for 10 years. From there I went on to do a pit stop in the operating room then quickly moved on to Rapid Response Team, then soon after the Nurse Lead of the Rapid Response Team. This was one of the best roles I held as a nurse. I loved being a Rapid Response Nurse and a leader to an amazing team.
My first significant role here in Georgia was an Infusion Nurse where I infused chemotherapy and other infusions to cancer and hematology patients. I never knew I would have a job where I would really love my patients. This role was surprisingly rewarding.
Currently I am a nurse in the ARU (Acute Recovery Unit) where I prep and recover patients that are having a Heart Catheterization or Electrophysiology Study. I am also enjoying this role as well.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
2 things. I am a Grandmother with my own 6 years old daughter. I have a 6 year old and a 28yo daughter that’s building baby number 3. My youngest daughter is only 4 years older than my Granddaughter.
I need a knee replacement. Despite that, I continue to not use that as an excuse to not lift weights. I may not be able to do all that I want to do, but I will do the BEST at what I can do. I think that’s important because I have to set the example to my client that your limitations can’t be your excuse (while staying safe and preventing injury). Just work with what you got and keep going!
