Today we’d like to introduce you to Nesia (SunShine) Whitehead.
Hi Nesia (SunShine), so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Nesia Whitehead, known in the community as SunShine. In 2019 I saw a need to change our society and challenge the norm. I decided to make that change by creating a nonprofit called NOMO which stands for Not On My Own. Intended to teach the youth about financial literacy, homeownership, credit building and overall wellbeing. Our focus is to practice our mission statement which is to: Educate, Empower, Encourage, EVERYDAY! Throughout the years we have been able to impact the lives of many through mentorship, training, and outreach. When we started we were focused on the youth but shortly learned that there is a need for people of all ages. Our focus for K-5th is to build leadership and character building. Our Mid years ages 12-20 focuses on job readiness, homeownership courses and establishing good credit history. Lastly, our adult group 21+ is catered to support mental, spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing. Many times as adults we can be neglected; expected to have it all together, however that is not always the case. We all need to know and understand we are NOMO- Not On My Own in this journey we call life.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like many new businesses the main struggle can be to make money. That is the first obstacle of any business, however for us a successful day looks like making an impact with everyone we encounter. Life is about teaching and guiding. Through hard times and the easy ones we have to remain focused on NOMO. The road may have curves and bumps however enjoying the journey is our goal which is mind over matter at all cost.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Since 2019, we have been able to assist youth and young adults with knowledge about adulthood that is typically not taught in school. We help with understanding credit, homeownership, buying a car, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance as they enter adulthood. We accomplish these goals by being able to give and provide outreach in the community.
Our goal is simple: to change the world, and it starts with one person. A person with dreams and a vision that they believe in. Teaching our youth and young adults about managing finances, taxes, and making informed economic decisions is essential for their future success. Crucial aspects of preparing individuals for a successful transition into adulthood. Find out how you can help.
I AM NOT ON MY OWN!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I have always been know as a positive light growing up, a creative out of the norm child so now to be able to fully walk in it and share my light with others has opened new doors for me. I am eager to learn new things and find new hobbies to occupy my time in. Growing up I did not appreciate my gifts as I do now, however now I encourage childhood me to pursue any dreams I had and to know that anything is possible.
I am a native Georgian and love the arts. In my youth I enjoyed being outside, crafts, and especially social events. I played in many sports short term and was heavily involved in dance. Being on the creative aspect has allowed me then and now to express myself beyond paper but the ability to impact people around me.
