Life & Work with Alivia Armstrong of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alivia Armstrong.

Hi Alivia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was inspired to begin cosplaying in 2016 after experiencing Anime Weekend Atlanta for the first time. What truly lit a fire under me was seeing the immense level of creativity from other cosplayers and the sense of community that I got from it. As far as streaming I started, like some, during the pandemic. I was already locked up in the house with a COVID-stricken roommate at the time, and a great friend of mine suggested that I should start streaming because he felt like I had the personality for it, and that I had the leadership skills to be able to be a community leader. 6 years later, and he was not wrong.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I will say that streaming has not been a hard journey, but it definitely has not been Skittles and unicorns either. Being a Black woman in a predominantly White, male space, I can say that there are occasional feelings of being overlooked or not considered to be in certain spaces simply because of how I look and how I carry myself, but I’ve always been one to create my own space whenever I had the feeling that I wasn’t welcome in others.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a streamer primarily on Twitch that usually streams First-Person Shooter games, with occasional Third-Person action-adventure games. I’ve also begun implementing cozy co-working streams into my schedule for those who work from home, or have any type of task lists that need to get done. I’m most proud of how I have gotten my community in the habit of holding each other accountable anytime we need that “older sibling” vibe. Sometimes we slide of track, or sometimes we just need someone to be that little voice in the back of our mind motivating us to keep going forward, and I’m proud that my community has turned into one that truly cares for the well-being of anyone that is in the chat. I also feel like that sets me apart from other streamers. We treat each other like real people, and not just like a username.

What were you like growing up?
I was such an extroverted child growing up. My family always said that I “never knew a stranger” because of how easy it was for me to hold a conversation with people that I never knew. I was always interested in music, cooking, and playing video games with my grandma.
