Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamora Waller.
Hi Kamora, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. Music has always been a part of who I am. In middle school, I started singing the national anthem for games and special events, and I continued doing that all the way through my senior year. The last time I performed it was at my high school graduation. In high school, I also got deeply involved in musical theater. My junior year, I had the honor of playing Dorothy in “The Wiz”, which was such a fun experience for me. Being able to carry a lead role taught me alot about stage presence, and storytelling through music. In 2015, I started teaching myself bass guitar. I wanted to understand music beyond just my voice. My mom would always say to me “there are plenty lil’ black girls that wanna sing, what makes you different?” That’s what made me want to learn guitar.
Then in 2020, I met my best friend, Trusarah. She was also an incredible singer and electric guitarist, and we connected instantly over music. She really believed in me and encouraged me to start my YouTube channel that same year. That step pushed me into sharing my voice with a wider audience.
Since her passing, I’ve taken some time away from posting on my channel. Behind the scenes, though, I’ve been working hard to perfect my craft. Writing, developing my sound, and really refining who I am as an artist.
Now I attend Fullsail University, majoring in music business. My passion is singing and guitar. However, I feel it is important to know the in’s and outs of the business side of it as well. By the end of this year, I plan to release a six-song EP dedicated to my best friend. It’s a step toward achieving not only my dreams, but hers too.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I’ve doubted my abilities for as long as I can remember. I would listen to singers I love like Jazmine Sullivan, H.E.R., and Lauryn Hill, and wonder why i couldn’t sound like them. I’d listen to people on TikTok and YouTube and wonder why my voice couldn’t be “unique” like theirs. But when I met my best friend I was completely blown away by her vocal ability and she was so secure in herself. However, when I first sung for her she was completely blown away by my abilities as well. There were things I could do that she couldn’t and vise versa. Making a like-minded friend really helped me understand that those thoughts I had were thoughts that even the best singers have and it’s usually all in our heads. Of course my best friend’s passing was the biggest struggle I’ve ever had to face. But i genuinely believe that she speaks to me through music. Words have never flown out of me so easily when writing until i began writing specifically for her. It’s a struggle I’m still overcoming but I’m getting better day by day.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a singer/ songwriter that specializes in rnb, souls, and neo-soul. What sets me apart is my ability to play bass guitar. There aren’t many young black female bass guitarists. I am most proud of the performances I’ve put on and auditioning and getting accepted to Fullsail University. Most people in my city know me for singing the national anthem at plenty important events here they may also know me for my YouTube channel “Covers By Mora”
How do you define success?
I define success as achieving any goals you set your mind to. Whether big or small. I believe success is determined by the person. If they are happy with the way their life is then they’re successful in my book. It’s not about money or fame or status to me.
