Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Borlenghi.
Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved here from Los Angeles where I was a commercial actress and had aged out. I needed to find a job. I studied and passed the Property and Casualty state test and started interviewing. In one of my interviews, I was told, “you don’t want to do this” He pushed me into looking into Medicare. He provided me a contact in Florida of an elderly lady that could guide me into getting started. We hit it off and I studied and passed my health insurance state test and then the AHIP, which is required to provide Medicare supplement advice. I have been doing this for five years now and I absolutely love it. I work from home and I will never age out. lol. I have expanded to Health, life, ancillaries and dental and vision. I am honest and always do best for the client. It feels good to help people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles at first was lack of training available. I kind of got thrown into it. I also had to learn a new computer. I was not familiar with PC’s. I spent 12 hours a day in the office so that I could learn. I knew the only thing standing in my way was knowledge. I also had a family crisis at the time involving my husband and one of my sons. I was hungry and I worked for success.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
HealthMarkets is a national insurance company. It is probably the best company to work with. We are a brokerage and represent many different carriers for life, individual health, medicare, dental/vision and ancillaries. We also able to help people with the state exchange, the marketplace subsidized plans. We have so many products to fit the needs of many different people.
How do you think about happiness?
It makes me happy when all three of my children are inside the home, I am productive, helping people and being with friends. I have a daughter in college, in Oregon, and twin boys that just turned 16. I feel mostly at peace when they are all under the same roof as me. I have to be productive. I work as much as I can to provide for my family. What also makes me happy, is knowing that I helped someone. Not only helping people with their insurance, but helping anyone with anything. It actually makes me feel good.
