Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigail Heather.
Hi Abigail, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I first discovered photography in high school when my parents gave me my first camera and encouraged me to take photos at my little brother’s baseball games. What started as a fun way to capture memories quickly grew into photographing entire teams, and that’s when I realized how much I loved documenting people and real moments.
When I was in college, I stepped away from photography for a little bit but eventually picked it back up as a creative outlet. I began asking friends, couples, and families to let me practice and quickly fell in love with telling their stories through images. Over time, I continued learning through hands-on opportunities, and mentoring which allowed my passion to grow into a full business.
Today, my work is centered around people and connection—capturing couples in love, growing families, and the meaningful seasons of life that deserve to be remembered. I’m passionate about creating images that feel genuine and timeless, giving my clients the ability to look back on their stories and relive those moments for years to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has never been a completely smooth road. Like many small business owners, I started from the ground up, which meant doing a lot of free sessions in the beginning just to build experience and confidence. There were moments where I questioned myself, compared my work to others, or wondered if I was growing fast enough. Balancing photography alongside teaching and everyday life was also a challenge, especially while learning the business side of things.
What helped me push through was staying committed to learning and focusing on genuine connection with people I photographed. I invested time into education, mentorships, and kept showing up even when it felt uncomfortable. Over time, those challenges shaped my style, strengthened my confidence, and helped me build a business that feels authentic to who I am. Looking back, I’m grateful for the struggles because they taught me the importance of creating work that truly reflects my heart and my clients’ stories.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My photography focuses on capturing genuine connection and meaningful moments for people in all seasons of life. I specialize in lifestyle photography that feels natural and true to who my clients are. Rather than overly posed images, I try to create a comfortable environment where people can be themselves so their personalities and relationships really shine through.
I think what I’m most known for is building lasting relationships with my clients. Many of the people I photograph come back year after year as their lives grow and change, and it’s such an honor to document those milestones and everyday moments along the way. That trust is something I’m incredibly proud of.
What sets me apart is the heart I bring into every session. I don’t just show up to take photos—I take the time to get to know the people in front of my camera so their pictures feel personal and meaningful. My background with the arts and education also helps me connect with families, couples, and kids, creating an experience that feels genuine from start to finish.
