Today we’d like to introduce you to Makiko Kobayashi.
Hi Makiko, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Professional Dancer / Choreographer / Dance Instructor
I am a professional dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor with over 15 years of experience working across Japan and the United States.
My dance career began in my teenage years when I performed as an opening act dancer at a-nation ’10, one of Japan’s largest music festivals. This early opportunity solidified my passion and commitment to a career in the entertainment industry.
After graduating from the Dance Performance Department at Nihon Kogakuin College, I joined the agency led by SAM from TRF—legendary pioneers of Japanese dance and pop culture. During my nine years with the agency, I performed professionally while teaching hundreds of students, ultimately training more than 1,000 dancers. Some of my students have gone on to debut professionally in Korea, demonstrating my impact as an educator.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Coming to America from Japan—and the language barrier and cultural differences that came with it—were unavoidable parts of the experience.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My main work involves teaching dance, choreographing, and producing shows.
My performance credits span both domestic and international stages. As a member of Tokyo Girls, I appeared in:
•NBA Stephen Curry Asia Tour (2018) – Official Dancer (Sponsored by Under Armour)
•TBS World Women’s Volleyball Tournament – Official Performer
•NBA LA Clippers Japan Representative Dance Team
•Crazy Ken Band 20th Anniversary Live
Additionally, I have worked as a sports model for Under Armour.
After relocating to the United States, I expanded my work into choreography and production, creating performances for major American sports organizations, including:
•NBA Atlanta Hawks Home Game Performance (2025)
•Atlanta United AAPI Month Collaboration (2025)
•Georgia Tech Football & Women’s Basketball Halftime Shows
I also produced dance performances for Atlanta JapanFest.
In 2024, I received an offer from Xcel Talent Agency and performed as a dancer for Feid during the COPA América Opening Ceremony at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, in front of an audience of more than 70,000.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Without taking risks, there is no growth.
I see it as an opportunity to grow and make the best of everything.
