Meet Adam Maloney and Rachael Buffa of Studio b Designs in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Maloney and Rachael Buffa.

Adam and Rachael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Rachael and I became friends in 2007. She was an artist & I was a furniture designer. We collaborated on a few projects prior to becoming partners.

Rachael’s interior design career began from unfortunate circumstances.

Rachael: My longtime best friend, Wilma developed Breast cancer in the prime of her life(44) with three young children she adored. She became ill when her youngest was 6 months old. A 4 year battle with cancer and 3 small children took a toll on her home.

When there was nothing else that could be done for her, Wilma was distressed about leaving her family in a worn environment. I had the idea to pitch in with some girlfriends and redo a couple of rooms in her home. Someone didn’t get the memo to not forward the email. I came home every day to thousands of dollars in checks in my mailbox. Overflowing! There was enough to do her house from top to bottom!

I was with her every day for the last three months of her life beautifying her home through the generosity of the people who loved her. When those people came to say their goodbyes they saw her work and the calls flooded in! It was more than she knew what to do with. Adam, a long time friend came to the rescue. StudioB and Adam are her gifts to me.

Adam: Around that same time… 2012, I am at a crossroad; being in the furniture business with my brother was not working any longer. I thought about a career change altogether. Rachael had moved in town and we did not speak as often. She called me out of the blue regarding some original art I had recently completed and asked if I had plans for it. We ending using the art in a space she had just completed and worked on a few small projects thereafter. This was the beginning of our design firm as we know it. We combined our client list and things took off from there.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Fairly smooth. You can’t make everyone happy all the time. No major struggles… just some overwhelming days.

When you have too many things going on at once it is difficult to focus on each client and their needs. We try to avoid having more than 5 projects at a time and they need to be entirely different scopes of work. eg, design projects vs. construction.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We would like to think we are the best at giving the client what they envision. Our website says “… everyone deserves the best interpretation of their style”. Sure we have our own design style but don’t push it on clients. We can’t tell someone, “here is what you want”.

Honestly, we can love one of our completed spaces even if it’s not our personal taste. In our opinion, that is a good designer. More than anything, we are proud of our work and proud when the client is thrilled.

What were you like growing up?
Me? I’m as silly as they come. Rachael laughs at most of my stuff. She has a great sense of humor as well. Rachael was a ballet dancer and I was a drummer… so we both love music.
