Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a new real estate photography business in Atlanta, Georgia comes with real opportunity, but it also comes with a tough set of challenges. One of the biggest struggles is simply breaking into a crowded market. Atlanta is a large, fast-moving metro with agents, brokers, builders, apartment communities, and investors all needing visual media, but that also means there are already many photographers competing for the same clients. New business owners often discover that having a camera is not enough; they need a polished brand, a strong portfolio, fast turnaround times, dependable scheduling, and customer service that feels professional from day one.

Another major challenge is the cost of getting started the right way. A serious real estate photography business usually requires quality cameras, lenses, flashes, editing software, a reliable vehicle, and often drone equipment. In Georgia, there is also the business setup side, including properly registering the company with the Georgia Secretary of State, which adds another layer of responsibility. If drone services are part of the business plan, commercial operators also need to follow FAA rules and obtain a Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107.

Atlanta itself creates operational challenges too. The metro area is large, traffic can eat into the day, and shoot schedules can quickly fall apart when driving between distant properties. Recent Atlanta Regional Commission reporting shows commute patterns remain a major factor across the 20-county region. On top of that, beginners must learn how to manage inconsistent bookings, seasonal slowdowns, weather delays, and clients who may compare prices without understanding quality differences.

In the beginning, the hardest part is often building trust. Agents want photographers who are reliable, fast, easy to work with, and able to make listings look market-ready. Until a new company has reviews, referrals, and repeat clients, every job feels like an audition. In Atlanta, success usually comes to the businesses that stay consistent, market aggressively, and deliver a premium client experience every single time.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is to focus on consistency before perfection. In the beginning, it is easy to think you need the best camera, the best website, or the most advanced editing style before you can compete. What matters more is showing up, doing solid work, communicating well, and building trust one client at a time. The people who last in this business are usually the ones who stay reliable, keep improving, and treat every job like it matters.

One thing I wish I knew earlier is that talent alone is not enough. You can be great behind the camera, but if you are slow to respond, hard to schedule, inconsistent with delivery, or unclear about pricing, it will hurt your growth. Running a business means learning customer service, branding, marketing, time management, and systems just as much as photography. The creative side is important, but the client experience is what keeps people coming back.

I would also say do not compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. It takes time to build a portfolio, earn repeat business, and develop confidence in your style. In the early stages, every shoot teaches you something. Some jobs teach technique, some teach communication, and some teach you what not to do again. All of it is part of the process.

Another important lesson is to price yourself thoughtfully. A lot of people start too low out of fear, then realize later they are working hard without building a sustainable business. Make sure your pricing reflects not just the time on site, but editing, travel, equipment, software, and the value you bring.

Most of all, keep going. Stay humble, stay coachable, and keep refining your craft. The people who succeed are not always the fastest starters—they are the ones who stay committed long enough to grow into something great.
