Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashanti Bates.
Hi Ashanti, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey has included several pivots. I began in the culinary industry as a chef, later becoming a partner and eventually a general manager for several restaurants. Those experiences built my leadership, discipline, and passion for serving people.
Over time, I wanted to develop another skill—something creative that I could also use for myself. That decision led me to cosmetology school, where I became a licensed hairstylist and discovered my passion for specializing in locs.
This is also how the name of my business, Frephorm, was born. I realized that I am free to write my own story—and create my own path.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t always been smooth, but it has been one of growth, resilience, and purpose. As a loctician, I’ve learned what it truly means to move forward even when fear is present—doing it scared while still believing in my craft.
Along the way, I’ve realized that every client isn’t meant for me, and that’s okay. The right clients appreciate the care, skill, and intention I bring to every set of locs.
The biggest lesson in this journey has been learning to trust myself. I have confidence in my talent, my skills, and the passion I pour into every crown I touch.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist who specializes in locs, known for starting and maintaining healthy, thriving locs. I’ve intentionally created a relaxing, welcoming atmosphere where my clients can truly unwind. Many of them joke about my “magical hands” — the kind that can put you to sleep while helping your locs grow and flourish.
I’m proud of the space I’ve built, not just for myself but for my clients as well. It’s more than a salon experience; it’s a community. We laugh together, cry together, and encourage one another. In many ways, I’m more than a hairstylist — I’m a safe space, a listening ear, a friend, a sister, and sometimes even a therapist.
Any big plans?
My vision for Frephorm is to grow beyond the chair and become a true connection within the community. I plan to develop training courses focused on loc care and technique, host meetups that bring creatives together, and continue organizing my back-to-school fundraisers to give back.
I recently moved into my own salon suite, so right now I’m not focused on making major changes. Instead, I’m choosing to be fully present in this moment and truly enjoy the journey as it unfolds.
