We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Patricia Kelly Marsh MD and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
One of the most surprising things I’ve learned about our customers is that people often delay care not because they do not care, but because healthcare can feel inconvenient, expensive, and overwhelming. Even when they are genuinely worried, life gets in the way: work, caregiving, cost, exhaustion, and everything else people are carrying.
What really stood out to me is that patients are not asking for more options. They are asking for easier access. Once we removed the barriers of scheduling, long waits, and high costs, they opened up, asked their questions, and sought care sooner. That taught me that sometimes the biggest healthcare problem is not awareness, it is access made simple.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dr. Patricia Kelly Marsh, MD, a Board-Certified Family Medicine physician, scientist, and the CEO & Co-Founder of Ask Me Your MD, Inc. (AMY MD). I built AMY MD out of a simple but urgent belief: getting medical care should be as easy as our family members reaching out to us for help.
AMY MD is a telechat medicine platform that connects patients with real doctors through secure instant messaging. No appointments, no long waits, and no unnecessary barriers. We created a faster, more affordable, more human way for people to get the care they need, when they need it.
What makes this journey especially personal for me is experiencing both sides of healthcare, as a physician caring for patients and as an entrepreneur working to fix a broken system. I care about using innovation to make an impact. My mission is to build AMY MD to help real people in real time, especially those who have been overburdened, underserved, or priced out of care. That is what makes AMY MD special to me. It is not just a company, it is a new way of thinking about access and what modern care can look like.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
One vivid moment that shaped how I see the world was becoming a caretaker for my father. That experience redefined how I saw medicine. It gave me a much deeper empathy for families who navigate hospitalization and recovery without a medical background.
One night, while staying with my father in the hospital after a procedure, he developed a complication. I knew something was wrong and kept insisting that a doctor come evaluate him. If I had not pushed, he likely would have suffered through the night and medically declined. I still remember calling the head doctor on the team at 2:10 a.m. and getting through because I was Dr. Marsh.
That moment has stayed with me because it made me realize how different that night could have been for a family without medical knowledge or connections. Many people would not have known what to do or how to advocate in that situation. It deepened my understanding of how vulnerable patients and families can be, and it reinforced my belief that healthcare must be more responsive, more accessible, and more human.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, I almost gave up after the loss of my grandmother. I stopped working to care for her full-time, and during that same season I was also navigating a divorce while trying to grow AMY MD. The company was only 10 months old, bringing in very little revenue, and my co-founder, who was pregnant with her second child, needed to step back and refocus on her family.
It was an incredibly difficult time emotionally, mentally, and physically. I truly felt ready to walk away. But in that moment, I heard an audible “no.” I cannot fully explain where it came from, but it was enough to make me pause. I told God that if it was truly Him, certain things would happen, and they did. That moment gave me the strength to keep going.
I am grateful I did, because the very next year, in 2024, AMY MD received pre-seed funding that helped move the company to the next level. It strengthened our technology and, most importantly, expanded the number of patients we were able to serve. That season taught me that sometimes the moment you are closest to giving up is also the moment right before things begin to change for the better.
I only removed the exclamation point after “they did” for publication flow, but your version works well too if you want it to feel more personal and expressive.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am fully committed to growing AMY MD, no matter how long it takes. I actually love the challenge of building at this stage, solving hard problems, learning in real time, and partnering with other organizations to expand our reach and impact.
At my core, I believe AMY MD is part of the future of medicine. I believe our pioneering model of Telechat Medicine will change care access, delivery, and cost not just locally, but globally. That belief keeps me grounded. No matter how long the road is, I am committed to seeing it through because I know what we are building has the power to help people in a real and lasting way.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say that I positively impacted their lives. I hope the stories told about me are not just about my accomplishments, but about how I made people feel and the difference I made during important moments in their lives. I hope people can say that because I, or AMY MD, was there, they were able to navigate change, uncertainty, or difficult transitions with less stress, less anxiety, and more peace of mind.
More than anything, I hope to be remembered as someone who used her life to help others in a meaningful way.
