Meet Trailblazer Raven Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raven Robinson.

Raven, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion and interests were always rooted in politics and working with political figures, and with that, I was also really devoted to Public Relations and the idea that it could work as a connecting link to get resources for people in need. During my time as a student at the City College of New York (CCNY), I was president of their Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter and was heavily dedicated to learning and developing my expertise within Public Relations. As I began to emerge into my career, I worked with many political figures, since 2009, and was always very diligent with my planning and work for them. Then, I began to conceptualize that business owners were candidates themselves as well and also needed a PR person on their team. I saw myself evolving the link between PR and Politics and founded the company PR2Politics which taught me how to build my brand as an entrepreneur and build my clientele from just politics to social justice work that was occurring in my community and beyond.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Whenever you are trying to attain a goal that pertains to your passion and interests, the road is never smooth but it is worthwhile. I think my road was needed in order for me to understand: 1) how the real world works and 2) how can I place what I wanted into what I needed to get that. Since my job and company entailed reaching out to various clientele, the struggle was to bring exposure to my name and brand which is never easy for any company because it involves reflection, time, and patience. I had to sit and think about who were the people that I wanted to represent through my PR assistance and what it was that I could bring that will benefit their campaign, brand, or company. Then, it was allowing myself and PR2Politics to grow with time as I worked with many emerging and notable public figures, who were invested in social justice implementation. This time, was needed for me to expand my expertise and to outline the next steps for my company. Lastly, the patience is literally key because we are not robots; we produce mistakes and we learn according to our experiences so, in order for me to understand that my company will grow, I needed to be patient with myself, but not complacent. My advice to other women is to incorporate those three elements into how you approach growing and building your company. I would also say to never silence yourself or ignore your capability, if you have expertise in a field, please show the world and never let anyone allow themselves to let you think that you don’t.

We’d love to hear more about PR2Politics.
Yes, of course, so PR2Politics is a consulting firm that offers public relations services to political candidates and emerging public figures. So, what we do is we work with elected officials such as assemblymen, city council figures, and senators to bring the right and most effective exposure to their campaign. What I mainly reiterate to myself for this company is that a campaign does not necessarily end once the candidate is elected, but just begins. The campaign is their work and involvement that their constituents and the public will continue to watch and want information on. Thus, I am beside them and work as the person to bring the press, work on press conferences, handle their social media content, partner them with other non-profit social justice organizations and events, and more. I specialize in Public Relations and I am known for my diligence within that field which folds into my capacity of knowledge with politics, business, and entrepreneurship. I also work with business owners who are beginning to build their company. I think my success is debted to how personable and informed I am with the community around me and the ways in which I use that knowledge to creatively implement ideas for my clients. I consider myself very in tune with multiple outlets of information and communities which makes myself well-rounded. I am most proud of the work that I have done with my brand as well as the work beyond my brand which includes my workbook, “ Your Campaign: A Business Owner’s Guide to Understanding Public Relations” because it shows my development as a person, an entrepreneur, and my expertise about Public Relations. I am also proud that people have noticed and acknowledged my work with rewards such as being able to be interviewed, speak on panels and in conferences, and motivate and educate other young women on how to expand their brand from local to global.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Yes, women are creating their own lane and opportunities. There are so many organizations and mentorship groups that women can join. I encourage women to build sisterhoods that can help propel their future.
