Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Wheeler.
Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Like many artists, I’ve been drawing and creating most of my life. All I could think about was getting better and better at drawing. Throughout my early school years, I was always drawing on class notes and doodling on notebooks. I entered college and really started to focus on what I wanted to create. I took many art classes and participated in life drawing sessions to help shape my own style. Now, I’m a character illustrator and designer currently finishing up my graphic design degree.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being creative and translating that through art has never been easy for me. I still struggle with finding inspiration from time to time. Growing up, I would focus more on art rather than my grades as I entered high school. I would also find myself wishing I was as good as other artists, not realizing that time and effort is the way to improve. The road to improvement is never ending and can be hard, but it’s definitely worth it!
Have you ever felt like giving up?
There are a lot of times where I lose faith in my own work, and that makes it hard for me to stay motivated enough to keep going. One thing I do to overcome that is by surrounding myself with things I find inspiring, such as art, magazines, pets, and nature.
What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
My advice for anyone starting any sort of creative career is make connections. Peers and friends are your biggest form of learning and getting your name heard. Don’t be afraid to try something new when you get burned out. Ask other creative people what their processes are and see if any of it can be fit into your own unique way of working. Also, practice, practice, practice. Nothing happens overnight, so don’t let yourself get overwhelmed with how little progress you think you’re making.
What are you most excited about these days?
I am the most excited about doing what I love everyday. I love creating for myself and for others, and getting to do it all the time is so refreshing. Professionally, I am excited to be working with others who think creatively, but differently than I do. It’s exciting to see how others work and utilize their creative processes.
