Conversations with the Inspiring Sarah Alley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Alley.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been obsessed with drastic transformations, from Legally blonde to the Devil Wears Prada to the Princess Diaries I knew I wanted to help women feel and look confident. I love being a source and an outlet for women in need of deep change. I started this career as a lost 19-year-old and I have given everything I have into this, now, at 25, I am a senior stylist in a beauty salon, I am a color educator, and I am a friend to everyone that sits in my chair. This career is so rewarding in many different ways, I love that no day is the same and I love being in a field that requires continuous education and if we’re being honest.. drinking champagne and being a makeover magician is a fine way to earn a living.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Blatantly – Hell no. The road is not smooth, nor paved. The very first salon I worked at, fired me because they didn’t think my color skills were at their standards. This is a very over saturated industry and If you don’t find ways to make yourself unique and set yourself apart, you will constantly find yourself overlooked. I have wanted to quit so many times, after a rough color correction or a tough client it would seem like this job was taking too much of my energy. One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever gotten is that you’re not for everyone. There will be people who don’t like your style or personality or whatever the case… be aware of your gut instincts. If something is telling you that a client may be a better match with a different stylist don’t be afraid to say so. If you’re in this for the money, you will get eaten alive. Spend more time investing in your education, never stop practicing, never stop asking questions. I am always a student and never a master.

What should we know about Champagne and Manes? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am specialized in vivid hair color, lived in hair color (balayage, ombre, etc.) and blonding. I am certified in 4 different color lines and have been an in-salon educator for 2 years. I am known for my “not your average” hair colors, turning people into mermaids and fairies, and being a straight up GIRL BOSS. I think what sets me apart is the time and dedication I put into my craft, my clients know I am always looking for the next trend class, so I can provide the best service to them. My clients know who I am, I love sharing experiences with them and as I do consider myself a professional I’ve never hidden my personal life. I think being relatable really makes people feel comfortable and feel like they can open up with their experiences. I’m here to make people feel good and sometimes that entails being a “therapist” and I’m here for it.

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Social media is always my go to when it comes to networking, my Instagram has basically built my clientele. I will say the #1 source of networking is word of mouth. A girl gets a fresh new banging purple color someone on the street compliments it, your client gives her your card and BAM new client. Make your cards stand out, include your social media handles so people can check you out. As far as finding a mentor, I got really lucky with some of the stylists I’ve worked with and for. Be inspired but most importantly find someone you can be vulnerable with, that’s where you will grow.
