Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Baker.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I had immersed myself in the arts, from a very young age – eventually leading me to directing theatre productions. My mentor, Chuck, helped mold my mind’s eye, immensely. For poignant moments in our production’s scripts, he would stop and ask if the entire scene (characters, set, lights, etc.) would make a pleasant picture. If the answer was anything but yes, we would stop and reevaluate the visual aspect.
In my last year with the theatre department, I decided to take production photos on my hobby DSLR. It was in this that my career launched. I eventually dropped my dreams of the theatre arts to chase the serenity that I gained, behind my lens.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is heavily laced in sociological tones. I have tried creating work for what is “popular” in the past, only to be disappointed with myself in the end. Now, I create for myself – if my heart sings, I know I’m on the right path. Once I knew my personal “why”, I wondered what was missing from societal lives. To me, that answer was a lacking in human connection.
Many have become accustomed to speaking without any repercussions. As a result, there has been a dismissal of others based on text or social media comments that are written, alone. It is my hope that through my work, others can transcend past preconceived notions or labels that one may have of someone and turn their eyes towards the paramount inward details of a subject.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
As an artist, I define and measure my successes by the differing levels of objectives that I set and reach. For me, goals vary in size – from being dedicated to a daily consciousness, to reflecting on the large-scale projects that I dream of working on. I trust that each new item I learn or quote that inspires will guide me to those next moments – continually surrounding myself with those that inspire and challenge me.
I believe that opening yourself to many artful possibilities is what brings success. If we choose to close ourselves to one idea of what somethings must be, we could potentially be robbing our lives from something greater than we ever had imagined. That is why every mental and physical goal should be measured, as they are so essential to the much-needed endurance of the industry.
