Meet Trailblazer Tyra Mills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyra Mills.

Tyra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been a creative person at heart for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I used to draw and create little projects to hang up in my room all of the time. In middle school, I expressed myself through online coding (mostly through Myspace). I discovered then how to manipulate and edit photographs. I got my first camera when I was 12, and fell in love with photography. I’ve been shooting and creating ever since.

I launched my small photography business in my last year of college and hit the ground running when I got to ATL.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been anything but easy. My main problem is, staying motivated and inspired. There will be times where I book and overwork myself because I have so many ideas and things that I want to do with my work. On the other hand, there will be times where I’m not inspired or motivated to shoot at all.

My advice to other women is to not put too much pressure on yourself. Don’t look at what other people are doing. Stay off of social media, and unfollow whoever or whatever makes you doubt your abilities. Give yourself breaks and realize there is no schedule for success. Your journey is your own, and whatever God has in store for you, no one can take it away. Don’t waste your gifts. Cherish them and give them to the world. Lastly, never let fear get in the way. Go after anything and everything you want, because it is all attainable.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Tyra Mills Photography – what should we know?
I do a number of things. I’m mostly known for photography. But I also do YouTube and music from time to time. I think what sets me apart is that I’m not a “one trick pony.” I do a lot of stuff when I’m motivated.

I’m most proud of how many skills I’ve taught myself. Everything I know how to do I pretty much learned on my own. I’m always trying something new and putting myself out there.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
I am mostly inspired by my mother. She’s not really creative but her ambition is unmatched and she goes after everything she wants in her career.
