Meet Southwest Atlanta Graphic Designer: Lydia Kashaka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Kashaka.

Lydia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I was 10 years old, I always knew that I wanted to do something with design. My dad used to draw cars; old school and concept cars that looked so realistic! He even wrote down the mechanical specs next to them! He was born and raised in Detroit so cars are his thing. He showed me the basics of shapes and how to use them as guides to start to create what you want. I still use that lesson today with my design projects.

In my 10th grade year at Banneker Highschool, I was introduced to Photoshop and my destiny began! That was my niche and I stuck with it! Later I was exposed to Illustrator and InDesign and began to bring ideas to life! Over the years, I grabbed the attention of chefs, entertainers, marketing organizations, educators, cosmetics companies, dietary supplement manufacturers, and the list goes on.

Has it been a smooth road?
First off, No. It has not been a smooth road. There have been bumpy bumps! However, you learn from your experiences and do better. When you love something, the rough bumps down the road do not detour your passion.

One of my bumps was confidence. My mother worked at a public relations firm in Buckhead. She used to tell me about her days at work and share some of her projects with me. I was so inspired by her go-getter personality and her ability to talk to anyone. She was my anchor for when I started to doubt my myself or my abilities. Find your anchor and remind yourself of who you are!

Have you ever wanted to stop doing what you do and just start over?
There was never a time where I thought about quitting. However, there was a time where I dealt with a very difficult project and was not sure if I could get it to completion. I had to step back and reevaluate what was going on and step by step complete it. After it was completed, I treated myself to a 3-day vacation in Puerto Rico.

Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
My advice is to find inspiration every day and educate yourself on new trends often. Find local art shows, research new graphic design techniques online, or find local workshops that talk about digital design and can show you how to enhance your understanding of the software that you use.

What are you most excited about these days?
I am excited about meeting new people and traveling more! When you meet new people and are around new environments, it tends to give so much inspiration!
