Meet Steve Beecham of Home Town Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Beecham.

Steve is a speaker and author specializing in helping companies and individuals grow their businesses by leveraging professional and social connections more effectively.

He has authored two books. Bass-Ackwards Business: The Power of Helping Without Hustling, is about building deeper relationships and painting better pictures for the people in your village so that when they think about your industry, they think of you first.

His second book, What’s Your Buzz? is about understanding what people are saying about you and your business, and how to use it to your advantage. Currently, President of Home Town Mortgage and Home Town Marketing in Alpharetta, Georgia, Beecham started his career in the retail industry as owner of a retail clothing store. He later entered the recycling industry before landing in the mortgage business.

During his 20 years running a successful mortgage company, Steve has interviewed hundreds of top salespeople and identified what he feels are the common elements of success. Through trial and error, he developed his remarkable system of helping people but not hustling them for business.

Through the use of this system, Beecham has become “the mayor of his village.” As a successful Atlanta area businessman and entrepreneur, he has spent many years seeking the perfect scenario: “My phone rings and people ask to spend money with me.”

An engaging and entertaining speaker and storyteller, Steve has spoken to sales and marketing professionals at companies across the country, including Edward Jones, Merrill Lynch, Travelers, Prudential Financial, John Hancock, Mass Mutual, Wells Fargo, Country Financial, Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide, Comcast, Seyfarth and Shaw, Global Healthcare, Cole Publishing, University of Georgia and Kennesaw State University, sharing strategies and techniques for growing referral business.

Steve has served on the boards of The Ron Clark Academy, North Fulton Community Charities, and the Alpharetta Public Safety Foundation. He is featured in How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age, the modern adaptation of the bestselling personal growth book of all time by Dale Carnegie.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I opened my first business, a men’s and women’s clothing store, with my family. My mom worked with me and my dad loaned the money. We ended up losing his money! But learned that getting into a business you know little about and starting a business with no business knowledge is not a good idea.

The next business with a friend. We started a recycling business. I learned that the owner with the most money in the deal actually controls the deal. I eventually sold him my interest. Then I went to work for my best friend and it was great to work in an environment where there was lots of trusts.

I got in the mortgage business solely to make money. I found that making money was fun and learned to love a business that paid good.

I got really good at the mortgage business and this taught me that if you are great at something other people want to hire you and some want your knowledge. This lead to writing books and motivational speaking. Now I know my life purpose is to help others get to where they want to go. I’m living that purpose now.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Home Town Marketing story. Tell us more about the business.
Home Town Marketing or stevebeecham.com is a motivational speaking and coaching business. I specialize in teaching professional salespeople and small business owners how to get more referral business and build deeper relationships with their customers.

I also touch them that there is a BUZZ about them in the community and that understanding that buzz is key to success. Your BUZZ needs to be about what you do not necessarily who you are.

Working on my third book now about self-talk. I am finding that highly successful people talk to themselves totally different than the rest of us. This internal conversation is the main game changer for your success.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t consider myself lucky but do feel like I have worked to put myself in the right place at the right time. the key here is a focused on getting to a place or person and it has worked really well for me.

For instance one of the things I teach people is to make a list of the top 100 people you need to meet this year. People who could change your life not necessarily in business but personal too. Then go about finding those who can introduce you to them.
