Meet Tracye Hutchins of WGCL CBS46 in Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracye Hutchins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tracye. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve been working in television news for 25 years. My career has taken me to Iowa, California, Arizona and Florida to name a few states. But Georgia kept calling me back. I spent a few years in Atlanta while working at CNN, and later came back to work at CBS46! For nearly 12 years and I’ve made this my home, though the traffic and mosquitoes still drive me crazy.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been easy. Being the first black female to be a one-man-band in a small Iowa community came with its hurdles. Let’s just say many of the local hog and soybean farmers weren’t sure what to make of a young black woman coming to ask them questions with a camera. As with any job, working in television news comes with a number of struggles in the newsroom, many are the same as they are on any job.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work for WGCL CBS46. We are the CBS affiliate in Atlanta. I’ve worked for the station for nearly 12 years now… first as a morning anchor, then an evening anchor and reporter and now I am happy to be back on the morning show starting at 4:30 am. Having this schedule allows me to spend more time in the community, not just on weekends but now evenings as well. I really enjoy being a part of a number of events as a speaker and emcee. It’s an opportunity for people to really get to know who this person they see on camera is.

I believe I’m known for doing just that, Taking time out of the day to not only represent the station but to also see me. That’s what we work to do as a company… to truly work for and with the community that I enjoy being in so much.

What were you like growing up?
I think I was a typical girl growing up. I loved Barbie dolls and sneaking to use my sister’s makeup. I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada… so I’m one of few people who can say that here Georgia. I always had an interest in news. I grew up watching the evening news and it’s one of the areas that I gravitated to even when I was younger.
