Today we’d like to introduce you to Chandra Currelley.
Chandra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a kid, l loved music and television, but it really started in high school where I was kind of a class clown until I met Actress LaTanya Richardson my drama teacher Who at the time was engaged to Samuel L. Jackson. She took me under her wing. Sam actually paid for my first Theatre workshop. There, I watched and learned. Because I could sing, I was told to focus on musical theatre, but I also liked R&B, jazz and Pop music. I auditioned for a popular local band and got job and worked all over the southeast region. After building my name Atlanta, I got the opportunity to open for major acts that came to the city, one was the Legendary jazz vibraphonist Roy Ayers I ended up touring and recording with him, between tours, I was singing at a Jazz Club and meet the SOS Band Who was looking for a replacement for the original lead singer. I got the job. I signed to their record label and toured and recorded with them for seven years.. we had 2 Billboard Top #10 singles 2 Billboard Top 40 Albums. During downtime between labels, I returned to my theatre roots. I was doing the lead in the musical “Sophisticated Ladies” were I net a young Tyler Perry and the rest is history. He would cast me in several plays and in his first movie “Diary Of a Mad Black Women” and most recent the television sitcom “For Better Of Worse” were play I play the hilarious Ms. V.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have been ruff times, times when I questioned myself. But it never stopped me from living my dream. Keep telling yourself “Why not me”.
