Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Thompson.
Derrick, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In high school, I worked with a real trainer and I saw how training can get really serious. I was always known for working hard because people would tell me I can’t do something, then I met this trainer who challenged me and encouraged me to help get me to where I wanted to be in life. In those 15 sessions I had with him and my team, he pushed me harder than I had ever pushed myself; and it made me feel like I had become a better person. From that instance, I decided I wanted to continue on and do more. Over time, the better I got with fitness people started telling me I should seriously think about making this into a career because I know so much and it’s what I’m passionate about.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road of entrepreneurs is never easy. When I first started it was hard for people to take me seriously because they only knew me as the athlete and not the trainer; and most people didn’t want to train with me because I was an athlete – assuming I would be too hard on them or that my methods would be too intense. And they were right. My first two years I trained clients as I would athletes. I had to quickly evaluate my program to fit a range of body types and performance levels. I would say, in my eleven years of training, I’ve had to go through a transitional period every two years to study the curve and get ahead; otherwise, you fall short.
The greatest challenge is the Atlanta market. The Atlanta market is over-saturated with “trainers” – some certified, most not certified- and people tend to be attracted to gimmicks or fads. I don’t have any gimmicks – it’s all about knowledge: the more you know, the more you show, the more you grow.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
My proudest moment? I can’t say I have just one. Everyone’s goal is ultimately my goal so I have a proud moment with everyone whenever we reach an accomplishment or breakthrough! I’m proud most of all that come to me their tenacity and bravery makes me proud I started Certified Fitness of Atlanta.
Tell us more about the struggles you’ve faced along the way.
They were many moments I had to endure struggle. From when I started with 0 clients and bills pulling up and having to figure it out on my own. All the way down to becoming homeless after my gym had to close its doors because of the market. It was during those times I learned more about myself and my ability to face overcome and endure adversity. The fear of failure and being ridiculed by my family and peers propelled me to push harder and soar to great heights! That’s why my company’s Mantra is “It Must Be Earned, Not Given!” Because I put my blood, sweat, and tears into this lifestyle and business.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like with fitness any city is the perfect city because it’s all about being personable with people. Most people need that push and someone to believe in them. Be that constant driving force behind each and every client and your brand should soar! Build and focus on relationships, not the dollar.
