Meet Heng Theng of The Iris Photos in McDonough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heng Theng.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been fascinated by films and how it moves people from one feeling to another. The ability to influence people is a great thing, and the film has had to most impact on me. I’ve always wanted to create a film that would impact the lives of others, no matter how big or small the impact is-as long as you can learn something positive from it. When I was younger, I’ve been scammed by a certain company I can’t say, but I was looking to be an actor. After being scammed, I was discouraged, but then I gave it another shot. I did a showcase and landed in the roster of J Pervis Talent Agency and Five Star Talent Management. After a while, I knew I needed to buy a camera to tape auditions, and I learned a lot from buying that first camera. I still remember it, the Nikon D3300, but then after many failed photos and videos, I’ve gotten better gear, and I’ve been doing headshots and model portraits ever since. I’ve also have done cinematography with it, and my knowledge about film is improving. Now I’m looking forward to getting started with college and majoring in psychology because the human mind is very mysterious, and film is all about exploiting the human mind (usually in a good way, but sometimes a bad way also).

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not, the scams, not getting paid with certain clients, the list goes on. Also, these late nights auditions are ridiculous.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Iris Photos does headshots and model portraits, although a couple of friends and I are starting to shoot movie reels for actors as well. What makes me proud of my company is that I can say that I put an effort in all of my shoots. This what sets me apart. I wouldn’t BS the client and tell them they look good when they don’t. We’ll figure it out, and we usually do. That is if they voice their opinion as well because it is about a collaborative effort to make something great.

What were you like growing up?
I was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, but I moved to the suburbs of Prek Enchieng. My dad was a doctor, so I was around a lot of patients. We lived in a clinic basically because in Cambodia, you can have your house and your business together. My dad was always a cheerful person, though. Everyone around him always had a great time when he’s there, so I developed that personality as well. He was also smart and wanted to never work for others, so that grew on me as well.
