Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Hillman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
All my life, I thought I was going to be a doctor. I went to college for Biology and I did fairly well even though I struggled.
After undergrad, I took a year off to prepare for medical school and I was accepted which truly shocked me.
When I began medical school, I hit a wall. My heart wasn’t in it. I was less than excited about a career as a doctor because I felt like I was not making the impact that I wanted to make in the lives of others.
So, I dropped out.
I then went to grad school and I still couldn’t find a “good job” in my field.
So, I stopped looking for a job and created my OWN job.
I started Mrs.KayH,LLC as a way for me to express myself and support other creative women and it really took off.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur is definitely not a smooth road. My journey started out of frustration and dismay at not being able to get a “good job” after working so hard to be “qualified.”
Now, I am finishing up my first year of business and there have definitely been lots of ups and downs.
There are certainly times where I am not gaining new clients and wondering how I am going to pay my phone bill and then boom I get three clients in a row.
I think people need to understand that as an entrepreneur your journey will always be a cycle but if you stick to it, it’s worth it.
My biggest struggle yet has been burn-out. I do so much because I am passionate about it but at times, I have entirely too much on my plate. Because of this, I have started building out a team to help me. I’m currently looking for a VA or assistant as my next hire.
This is a good problem to have but I would definitely recommend to my fellow entrepreneurs – build a team from the beginning.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My company is Mrs.KayH,LLC.
Mrs.KayH is four businesses in one. There’s my creative lifestyle blog, Mrs.KayH, where I share my journey as a female creative entrepreneur, this is my personal brand. Essentially I share how to create the life you love and feel called to create. The blog is full of manifestation and practical actions on how I have grown my business up until this point. The goal is to help other creatives build their businesses.
Then there’s Moments with MK, my wedding and portrait photography business. I specialize in capturing candid moments and documenting people’s lives; whether it’s your first kiss as husband and wife or you eating your favorite ice-cream, I want to capture those intimate moments.
I also own a social media management company, The Social Savvy Co, where I help small business owners manage their online presence via: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Email, Pinterest, and YouTube.
Lastly my love child, She’s a Creative, which is a podcast and community of female creative entrepreneurs where I offer support and education on how to build a creative business.
I am known for being a multi-passionate creative and all of my brands show women how to dominate in the sweet-spot of their creativity. My goal is to support female creatives and help them turn their passions into profits.
I do this through photography (because everyone needs great images of themselves or their work), social media management and education (to teach women how to leverage the power of social media to build a strong brand), and my podcast and community (which brings creative women together).
I am most proud of my She’s a Creative community and podcast because this group of women are so strong and excited about being creatives and building their brand. I started this brand because I wanted to make friends and now it is so much more than friendship. We are accountable to one another and each woman in there pushes the next to reach their full potential.
What sets me apart from others is that I full embrace being multi-passionate and I don’t conform to the idea of starting small. I go all in and I give that same energy to help other women be “all-in.”
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I highly recommend starting a business in Atlanta. There is no shortage of people that need your product or service. You can find your tribe anywhere!
I have met several close friends since moving to Atlanta and I honestly believe that if I were not here, my businesses would not be growing the way they have.
Atlanta is popping boo!
