Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Andris.
Tara, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Every week when I was young my mom and I had a standing date, “Tara Tuesdays.” As one of four children, this one-on-one time with my mom was so special to me. We often wandered our local art museum, exploring, having lunch, and playing make-believe. I loved to imagine what it would be like to be one of Renoir’s dancers or to live during the Ming Dynasty. Thanks to these adventures, I’ve loved art as long as I can remember, and equally, as important to me, I’ve felt at home in Museums. I remain so moved by artists’ interpretations of the world around us and appreciate how much art can enrich my understanding.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As an artist, I’m inspired by beauty of the ever-changing sky and find that clouds often make their way into my paintings. I paint using oil paint on wood panels which are first covered in metal leaf. I love how the leaf mimics the depth and reflectiveness of the sky. Lately I’ve been playing with watercolor and having fun with that as well, but still incorporating metal leaf! I’ve been painting with metal leaf for about ten years now, and I feel like my work looks a little naked without it 😉
In studying art history, I became so interested with notions of the sublime — my quick interpretation is an idea of the extraordinary beauty of our surroundings entwined with the smallness of man — and found great comfort in it. I’m often guilty of getting caught up in small stresses or worries of day-to-day life, and I love that art offers this reminder to step back and gain perspective. I’m hopeful that my work inspires viewers to look at their surroundings in a new way.
How can artists connect with other artists?
I’ve actually found that Instagram is a great place to find community. So many artists and entrepreneurs are willing to share what works for them or what they’re struggling with if you reach out.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
The best place to see what I’m currently working on or my latest finished work is my Instagram – @taraandrisart. After that would probably be my website, taraandris.com. If you like my work, I’d love it if you’d follow me on Instagram, and of course, buy something that speaks to you! I try to keep my work accessible in terms of pricing, so you’ll find there’s a lot to choose from. This year I’ve launched a desk calendar that I’m so excited about!
