Today we’d like to introduce you to Mylah Windham.
Mylah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been involved in some form of the arts, whether it be dancing, rapping, instruments or singing. I come from a musically inclined family, so it’s just kind of what we do. Initially, I definitely learned more towards dancing than anything, but after playing around singing with one of my cousins in a hotel during our yearly family reunion, I was encouraged to sing in front of the whole family.
After getting a huge reaction from my family, the word quickly spread at school and in the church that I could sing and I started getting a lot of attention for it. Then came the talent shows and more attention. Fast forward past MANY showcases, auditions, tv shows, and stages… I’m STILL randomly winning people over with my voice today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think it’s been smooth in the way that I’ve not met a lot of opposition. My parents weren’t against me doing music like some parents are. I didn’t have to “fight” for the opportunity… it just fell in my lap a lot of the time. The challenge, though, has been remaining persistent and optimistic.
While I’ve gotten a lot of great opportunities, none of them have really been “THAT ONE.” It hasn’t translated in a huge way, financially, and sometimes I wonder if it’s reeeaaaalllllly meant for me to have because I’ve gotten close so many times, but the main goal (a Grammy; a big tour, etc.) has remained elusive. Staying motivated and not beating myself up has been a challenge at different points in my life.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I sing and write music, and I perform as a solo artist as well as a background vocalist. I think I specialize in being versatile! I do pretty much everything from RnB, Jazz, rock, pop, oldies and even a little country. I’m very proud of that versatility, and I think that’s definitely something that sets me apart and keeps me working and sought after.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I think the first people I’d give credit to are my first manager and production team in Indianapolis (Earl Coleman, Will Baker & Pete Woodruff). They poured into me and risked a ton of money just molding me as an artist. My first vocal coach, Barry Dale, gave me wisdom and confidence that I still use today!
Jason Williams, who was one of the mentors on MTV’s Making The Band DEFINITELY helped to create a beast in me and helped to mold the resourceful person I am today. He used to love to say that he/we could always “work a wonder!” We made so much happen with so little. His belief in me was invaluable!!!
Adonis Shropshire for being extremely instrumental in polishing my songwriting and arranging. Keith Harris for always being a willing collaborator. My partner Mike Wynder for his unwavering belief and simply being there. Victor Jackson for being the plug on so much. Anthony David for more visibility by sharing his platform.
Wow… it feels good to acknowledge all of that!
