Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim McNaron.
Kim, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Even as a little girl, I loved flowers. It was more than a bloom. I was captivated by their texture, color, fragrance and the emotions they stir. I was the youngest student in the floral design school, where we learned basic elements of design techniques. My design style developed over the years, as I began to know the personalities of the blooms. After all, the design is typically a focal point of the celebration. As Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us, “the earth laughs in flowers.” I love laughter, and the joy marriage brings. Holland Daze was created out of our love of the gift of marriage. When I was 5, I used to gather my favorite blooms in the yard to pretend I was a bride. Growing up in a family business, I was encouraged to use those creativity skills. I was drawn to color growing up in a paint shop and valued how a palette developed. My love of blooms only grew, as learned to layer textured blooms, whimsical dancers, hand dyed silk in a palette that reflects a bride’s personality in what we call her floral signature. It is truly glorious that we get to share what we love to do, as the bride’s trust us with the day they share their vows.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
When we meet with a bride, we like to get to know her personality a bit. We often have brides who have dreamed of their day since they were a little girl. We get that. Our goal is to create the look she has dreamed of with blooms that share her personality. We encourage brides not to let comparison rob their joy. To rest in their own idea of what is pretty. Blooms remind me of a David Crowder lyric. ” through broken earth flowers come up pushing through the dirt.” When we are surrounded by so much brokenness in the world, it is a reminder that beauty can still be found in most unexpected places.
Our message is the most beautiful part of the wedding is the sharing of vows. But that time can be more memorable when it’s surrounded with exquisite blooms and a sweet fragrance. It truly turns that time into a celebration that is unforgettable. We can get lost in all the details of life, but at the end of the day we can share our love journey with friends and family- that’s precious.
Thankfully, we have made such sweet friends with so many of our brides, and are so thankful to be a part of their love story.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
The biggest challenge for artists today is educating consumers on costs. With so much inspiration at our fingertips, often expectations collide with reality. There are so many blooms to choose from and so many hours that go into curating the design. The florals don’t just show up looking Pinterest worthy. It takes many years to learn the quality and characteristics of dependable blooms and how they perform. It takes hours of processing them to showcase them at their optimum stage. In addition, they are often hobbyists that claim work as their own or jeopardize fair pricing.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Our designs are mostly in weddings here in Atlanta, but we have traveled throughout the southeast. Some of our recent events are on our blog at www.hollanddazeweddings.com. We are often referred by our past brides, or brides that follow us on Instagram.
