Today we’d like to introduce you to Yolanda Broome.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I like to say, “It’s complicated,” but that’s not the half of it. My name is Yolanda Broome, and I moved to East Atlanta from Birmingham, Alabama in 1998 with a one-year-old, a two-year-old, and a six-year-old. My two-year-old had been diagnosed with autism and in my desperate search to find information, I had happened onto a website for the Coralwood School in Atlanta. So, we moved, I found a job in procurement (I had formerly been an attorney) through a firm that placed attorneys and paralegals in contract positions.
I bounced around for a bit, which is the whole point of working contract positions. I worked with AT&T, McKesson, and landed at Morris Brown College. I was the Human Resources Supervisor until the dreaded president that caused its demise (she’s like Voldermort; therefore I shall not utter her name). I sadly left Morris Brown College, but this time I went back into procurement, with the added bonus of contract administration at DeKalb County Government. Over my ten years with DeKalb, I consistently noticed that small businesses didn’t stand a chance at getting a contract.
Most were ill-prepared, understaffed, and too hungry to wade through the very shallow and always murky waters of subcontracting as a local small business enterprise. I vowed to myself that when I retired, I would start a company that assisted small businesses and that’s exactly what I did. And here’s what I found out… most small businesses don’t bother to follow any of the legal requirements actually to start a business. Even if they do, they don’t have the staff or know-how to obtain certifications necessary for selection as subcontractors on projects with counties and other municipalities.
My company is a small business that offers business and contracting advice to other small to mid-size companies. We can set up businesses (legally) and help them obtain their minority, woman, disadvantaged or veteran-owned certifications. Once they are ready to do business, we can help them find contracts. We prep them for pre-bid and pre-proposal meetings and even help them complete their bid package if they are bidding as a prime contractor. When they win, we help them negotiate their contract and ensure after the start of work that the administration of the contract continues through contract close-out.
I have four part-time contractors who help me make it happen. And when I get tired of reading contracts, I pick up one of my own self-published books (Flowers for Amanda, How to Dress for Success (and not like a Mess)), or some of the dozens of poems and short stories that I have written. I am an avid reader and writer. A business owner. A mom. A wife. And I love it all. Atlanta is all about business. I could not have picked a better place… and just think, AUTISM brought me here!!!!
Has it been a smooth road?
I had three very young children and was recently divorced. I had no family or friends here. My middle child was suffering from a disorder that I had never heard of before her diagnosis.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Procurement and Contracting Solutions, LLC – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My company helps other companies do business. From setting up the corporation to closing out its contracts, we are there every step of the way to help administer contracts. We also write policies and conduct staff trainings.
I am proud of the fact that we have helped so many people start their businesses the right way. Our commitment is what sets us apart from other companies. We do what we say we are going to do. Once committed, we perform with the utmost integrity and professionalism.
I am a jack of many trades. I am an excellent writer, a ferocious presenter, and a thorough researcher.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
In Atlanta, you can be whatever you want to be. You can sell any service, manufacture any widget, and consultants can consult on any topic.
There is enough business to go around. I don’t like the traffic. I wish we had a more robust transit system, especially on the east side.
