Meet Shawn Crystal of Inkpulp in Alpharetta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Crystal.

Shawn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always dreamed of drawing comic books for Marvel and DC Comics. I worked tirelessly and stayed focused. My work paid off, and I am now living my dream of being a professional comic book artist.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, not at all. It’s been a really tough road. Its been a lifetime journey. Trying to break in was extremely difficult, only to be matched by trying to stay in. There were many times where I started to doubt myself. Many times where I wondered if I was being unrealistic, too much of a dreamer.

Many times where I felt like I’d never make it. BUT, I did, and I am. The struggles don’t go away, they continue. I stay focused and positive. I work hard and try my best to enjoy the journey. I’ve learned that there is no destination.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am a professional comic book artist. I have worked for Marvel Comics on such titles as Deadpool, X-Men, Scarlet Witch and Guardians of the Galaxy. I have also worked for DC Comics on such titles at Batman and Mother Panic.

I also host a podcast (Inkpulp Audio- on iTunes, Spotify, and Patreon) where I interview other creative and eclectic professionals and talk about how to survive this crazy lifestyle.

I am known for my style of drawing and inking. A blocky/cartoony style with signature dry brush ink line.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Working on Batman, and my soon to be released X-men book, “X-Men-Black: Juggernaut.”
