Today we’d like to introduce you to Linnéa Geiger.
Linnéa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Stockholm, Sweden and came to Macon, GA as an international student, I met my husband pretty much immediately, after much traveling and long Skype conversations I got here on a fiancé visa and we got married. We moved to Colorado where we spent the past seven years and now we moved back to Georgia to be close to family.
My history as an artist started as a child. I was bed written for a long period of time and had to start finding hobbies that did not require me to be physical. I started drawing, writing, painting, and I remember looking through photo books, being completely taken away with how a photographer could capture my city, my bus stop, and somehow make something so normal – look beautiful.
Fast forward a few years, my husband gave me a camera as an anniversary gift, I became a mother of two wild boys how had half their family on the other side of the earth and I started to intently taking photos to send home to my family. I have a blog and the blog readers really play a big role in me daring to try to take photography more serious. They cheered me on all the way, and still do! As my second son was born, I quit my job and do something that made me happy every day instead of drained! I have been in business for a year and it is one of the best decisions I have made for myself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has been hard, but only because of me, my own judgment of my work and abilities. I am the one who have put up all the roadblocks by saying I am not good enough, not talented, not able. If I put that part aside, it really have been a smooth sail. It bothers me to think about it, how the inner voice can be really damaging!
The thing I struggle with the most, besides what I just mentioned, is time management. I love photography so much that I want to spend all my time learning, shooting people and edit. No time is spent on marketing, finishing my website or trying to get my name out there.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in emotional – birth and family photography. I don’t want to ask my clients to look at me and smile, I want to be a fly on the wall, to capture the moments we just do, but so simply forget. The parents smelling their kid’s necks, the couple who can’t take their hands away from each other. A smile to the camera is only a smile to the camera while a parent smiling watching her kids play is so much richer, deeper and more satisfying. It is capturing a moment, a memory. Sometimes those moments are so much of a family’s habits that they don’t know of them until they see them in photos.
I think I am a little bit different with trying to capture that instead of “look at me, now smile” photos. I also don’t try to make my photos too light and airy. I am pretty dark and moody, I think it is the Swede in me that is drawn to those color settings.
Birth photography is something I keep extra close to my heart, It is such a beautiful transition and I am so honored every time I am invited to welcome a baby to the world. I get to photograph when people meet the love of their life! That first look is better than any wedding photography!
A lot of people assume that a birth story session might be similarly priced to a portrait session. But because birth is so unpredictable, I go on-call for the birth mother from week 38 until the baby is born. I’m ready to join their family – day or night – be it right on your due date, at 38 weeks, at 42 weeks…It’s sacrifice I love to make for my clients, but it does require a lifestyle that’s very different than most. I don’t really ever get “off time”. I make sure to stay close to home at all times, not to book any important appointments, or do anything impromptu more than an hour from our home. By charging as much as I do, I can stay with you as long as your labor takes. Some women give birth in 6 hours, other women in 30. Each birth is different, unique and unpredictable and every single one leaves me completely amazed.
What were you like growing up?
I was always outside, playing with rocks, sticks and my pretend animals. I read tones of books, and my imagination was running free. I think about that a lot today, with a mothers anxiety, how I can give my children the same freedom and opportunities to explore.
