Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Everts.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michael. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After graduating from Auburn in 2012, I started my career at an Audio Visual company called Avyve. During my time at Avyve, I learned a tremendous amount about presentation technologies and collaboration within a physical space – ranging from small huddle rooms to 200-person auditoriums. We built some incredible meeting spaces for large corporate clients like Suntrust, Georgia Power, and Arby’s. After four years of managing their marketing, I decided to take a risk. I left Avyve and partnered with Daniel Levison to create a coworking concept called SharedSpace. We saw a need for coworking in more suburban markets closer to where people actually live and traditionally don’t have access to these types of facilities.
In late 2016, SharedSpace first opened its doors of our 5,000 square ft. location built right in the heart of Dunwoody. We filled up quickly with a community of local members who were tired of fighting Atlanta traffic to get to work, and wanted somewhere close to their homes that felt familiar and comfortable. It took about six months until we realized we had created something that people needed and loved to use, so we decided to double our footprint and take over the entire fifth floor.
With our first location right at the intersection of 285 and 85, we had effectively established ourselves in one of the most accessible areas for people living on the northeast side of Atlanta, and we wanted to create another hub for people living in northwest Atlanta. In March of this year, we opened SharedSpace Cobb (15,000 SQFT) right next to The Battery and had been building another thriving community to help connect Atlanta entrepreneurs and freelancers.
This December, we are opening our third location in downtown Augusta and could not be more excited to bring coworking to the city!
Has it been a smooth road?
As the coworking industry is relatively new, and there is no easy guidebook to success, it has definitely been a struggle being a startup trying to compete with multi-billion dollar coworking giants. Creating something from scratch inevitably comes with challenges and growing pains, and we are definitely learning along the way. We are constantly creating new internal processes to improve and I love finding new software and tools to help us operate more efficiently.
Like every business, we’ve taken calculated steps to create a brand and vision that connects with our audience so that we can better build an organic member culture at our spaces. Although we’ve reiterated many of the original design aspects of our first space in our newer spaces, we’re constantly tweaking, redefining, and reworking the aesthetics of our physical space to create a more well-defined brand image.
Most importantly, we have an absolutely stellar team, and everyone wears many, many different hats. We all support each other in every aspect of our team member’s lives, and our ability to find and pick up the slack helps us lean on each other for the overall success of our business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with SharedSpace – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
First and foremost, Sharedspace is a coworking space focused on providing modern and professional workspace to entrepreneurs, small business owners, and event planners.
With a focus on servicing the suburban residents of Greater Atlanta, our 24/7 access memberships, private offices, and large event spaces, make SharedSpace the ideal space for small businesses looking to legitimize the professional feel, aesthetic, and productivity of their team and brand!
We constantly receive extremely positive feedback on our customer service, hospitality, and flexibility. We pride ourselves on our southern hospitality, friendliness, and flexibility when it comes to the needs of our members. We’ve built a close-knit community where our team knows every member’s name and makes them feel welcome while also helping them connect with other members.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the sense of community and hospitality found all throughout Atlanta. Everyone here seems to go the extra mile to help a stranger out without expecting anything in return. I also love the amount of trees in the city as well. Anytime I visit another major city in the US I am blown away by how baren the landscape feels without the lush greenery I am used to seeing here.
On the flip side, I wish that the City of Atlanta was more walkable and had better public transportation, as it would be nice to rely less on cars. It’s a pain having to Uber everywhere on the weekend!
