Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Schieffelin.
Julie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am an artist from Johns Creek, Georgia, USA. I am a 43 year Georgia resident and have lived in the Johns Creek area for over 25 years where my husband, John, and I raised two incredible children who live in the Atlanta area. We love our community and make it a point to support local businesses, art, schools, music and events. My favorite saying is “shop local, ya’ll”!
Art is an integral part of my life. I am inspired by other artists. I love it when I see something new, something that no one has done before. I am inspired by colors and by textures and the often-unexpected combination of the two. I am inspired by what is beautiful to me and all of the different forms in which beauty presents itself. And I am always intrigued by what others find beautiful. I want to create art that makes others stop for a moment and think “hey – that’s cool” or “hmm – I don’t know how I feel about that” or even “nope – that’s not for me”. I want to evoke an emotion with my art.
Art is an essential element of my life – like my family, my friends and our animals. Life would not be complete without art. I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to create on a daily basis and that I have found my passion. My wish is that everyone can find their passion and involve themselves in it!
I have been a professional artist for over 20 years, with works in private collections and businesses throughout the country. I have participated in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the southeast and was the artist in residence at Cafe Tu Tu Tango in Buckhead for several years. Most recently, I participated in a group show at the Grandview Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia and was featured in the North Fulton Neighbor Newspaper. During January and February of 2018, select pieces were available at the Trinity School’s Spotlight on Art Artist Market and in April of 2018, I had the honor of participating in the Wesleyan Artist Market at The Wesleyan School in Peachtree Corners, Georgia where over $30,000 was raised for their arts program. In November of 2018, I will be the featured artist at the Georgia Hunter Jumper Association Finals Horse Show. My work is currently available at Sis and Moon’s in downtown Alpharetta, Wild Oats and Billy Goats in Decatur or by contacting me directly. Thank you!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My favorite medium is acrylic paint on stretched canvas. I like acrylic because it is fast drying and lets me add a lot of layers quickly – I am impatient! I paint a lot of animals – cows, roosters, chickens, deer. I also enjoying painting dog portraits – clients love seeing their babies artistically portrayed! Flowers and abstracts are two of my other favorite subjects – I love the freedom and bright colors – a flower can be interpreted so many ways! My art has been described as “happy” – I love that! I am happy when I am painting it and I hope that it makes others happy as well.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Currently, there is a lot of art on the market, which is great. When there is high supply, prices are low, so it is hard to make a living as a full-time artist. When you cannot “art” full time, it is difficult to be at your creative best.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is currently available at Sis and Moons in Downtown Alpharetta and at Wild Oats and Billy Goats in Decatur.
