Today we’d like to introduce you to Ary Satish.
Ary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ll start with where I’m from! I am from South India, from a state called Kerala, through I was raised around the world, in places including Bangalore, Mumbai (India), Colombo (Sri Lanka), Florida, Massachusetts, Dallas and New York (USA). I am a screen and stage actor who has performed in theater, film, commercials, and music videos.
I discovered my love for acting by being cast in various theater productions throughout my years of schooling, such as in The Laramie Project and Metamorphosis. Alongside this, I also competed in the sports Track and Field, Soccer, Volleyball and Badminton for my international school teams. I eventually transitioned to solely stage and film work in after being accepted to and attending New York University’s undergraduate acting program at Tisch School of the Arts, earning my bachelor of fine arts degree in 2022, with a major in Drama and a double minor in Producing and Entertainment Business at the NYU Stern School of Business and NYU Tisch. I am an alum of The Meisner Studio and Stonestreet Studios, where I trained specifically in the Meisner acting technique, stage combat, clown, improvisational comedy and the Williamson technique, among others.
I have had leading roles in projects produced by Goldfin Films, Auvera Films, Native Pictures, Stonestreet Studios and Plus Ultra, among other production companies. I have also starred in over 100 student films and projects while at NYU, receiving global critical acclaim at film festivals such as the Manhattan Film Festival, Big Apple Film Festival, Berlin International Short Awards, DRUK International Film Festival, Nice International Film Festival, OTB Film Awards, WorldFest, IndieX Film Fest, Blackbird Film Festival, Shockfest Film Festival, Dumbo Film Festival, Long Island International Film Expo, New York Long Island Film Festival, New York Flash Film Festival, Long Island International Film Expo, Austin Lift-Off Film Festival, Washington DC South Asian Film Festival, Cult Movies International Film Festival, 4th Dimension International Film Festival and DFW South Asian Film Festival.
In terms of my performances: I have appeared in the films “Natural History” (2018), “Rick Rickter” (2020), “Arcane Headshots” (2022), “Teddy Ruxpin” (2022), “American Weasel” (2022), “Rising Lotus” (2022), “Take Care” (2022), “Model Minority” (2023), “I Can’t Live Here Anymore” (2023). I have also played the leading role in the Off-Broadway show “Le Bijou de Paris” in Manhattan, NYC. I was featured in recording artist Mia Gladstone’s official music video, “FOOD” (2020), recording artist Sean Leach’s official music video, “OutWithOut” (feat. Daleela) and indie band “The Yesters” official music video, “Kingston City Morgue”. I have also appeared in commercials for the New York Rangers, Madison Square Garden, Markup.io, NYU Langone Health and the 5&Go App.
For my role in both producing and acting as an up-and-coming actor who grapples with contentment and confinement within his romantic relationship in the romantic drama short film, Take Care (2022), I am grateful to say I had won the “Best Actor” award, “Best Drama” award, became a finalist for “Best Picture” at the New York Film Awards, a “Best Actor” award at the Cult Movies International Film Festival, and received two “Best Picture” nominations for this film at the IndieX Film Fest and the New York Independent Cinema Awards. I had also received a nomination for “Best Story Short” at the New York Long Island Film Festival for the murder-mystery short film “Mise En Place” (2022) which I produced.
As a multilingual, multi-hyphenate artist known for portraying vulnerable male characters, I care most about bringing an international perspective on storytelling. I hope to break the geographical barriers of the film by bringing a newfound energy to roles portrayed by actors of color.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In a profession like this, it’s hard to ever say the road will be smooth, but specifically for me, I’d say that some of the struggles along the way consisted of figuring out what the best ways were to “get in the room”. What I mean by this is that I believe that in order to become a part of amazing projects within the entertainment industry, you need to be close to the source. The place where a project’s idea is conceived or a place where the art begins to get made. When there are so many actors in the city and a much smaller number of really special projects taking place, getting into the room where you can be a part of these projects is a big challenge. You either need to know someone who is already working on the project and can bring you in, create relationships with writers and directors who are always looking ahead for new talent for more projects or create the work for yourself to act in.
When I was initially a newcomer into the industry, finding your foot in the door, networking and forming these new relationships were hard – of course, since no one at the time knew who I was. However, just by being patient, consistent with my approach of reaching out, showing up to anything from dinners or open calls, and most importantly, by just trying to be kind and respectful, I did start to see that people began to remember my face and my industry relationships started to grow. Once this progressed, I soon became included in more projects and expanded my community, which led to me being in more rooms and getting more work. The struggles that came in this process was what smoothened the road for me over time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a stage and screen actor who loves to perform as an actor across mediums – whether it be film, television, commercials, voice-over, theater or music videos – and challenge myself to take on ‘bigger and better’ roles. What I’m most proud of is my single-minded focus on ‘making it’ in this industry. ‘Making it’ to me doesn’t mean fame but rather means the ability to grow as an actor by performing on the largest of scales in film and theater, influencing bigger audiences with my work and creating a large body of performance work which will be remembered. I believe my work ethic and determination separate me from most, as I truly to give this goal I just mentioned my all. I work towards it every day, visualize short-term and long terms goals and create steps to get closer toward them. This was led me to perform across all mediums an actor can perform in, allowing me to diversity my skillset as a performer, find what I love doing most and figure out my strengths quickly.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the music! Traffic can be a challenge though.
