Check Out Marshall Coats’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marshall Coats.

Hi Marshall, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a musical family and started playing music professionally when I was 15 as a bassist. In college, I studied Music Composition and spent a few years post school working at my Dads music shop, Atlanta Discount Music, which is still in operation.

In 2008, I left the music store to tour with a few original projects and eventually ended up performing on national television with Kid Rock, Travis Barker and the rapper Yelawolf.

Having played on many studio albums by this point, i became fascinated with the process of making records and began producing in 2014 and have been doing that ever since.

As of this writing I just finished building my own studio in Decatur GA three days ago with the help of some very talented and generous friends. My goal is to elevate Atlanta artists both musically and personally and to create a creative hub for the community to thrive in.

Im currently working on Stranger Company’s (Jam and blues) upcoming EP and Bea Bayner’s (Pop singer/songwriter) album.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It can take be hard to find your voice as producer as there is so much to learn on the technical side of things which I’m definitely still learning about as it is ever evolving. But I think that is just something that develops overtime, if you keep working at it. It’s a very subtle art and one that involves knowing yourself well and knowing how to relate to all different kinds of people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I feel like my multi-instrumentalist background has helped me a lot in the studio and especially scoring and composing. It’s easier to work with an instrumentalist or vocalist on their part when you understand the language of their instrument.

But honestly as a producer, i think my greatest strength is being able to relate to the artist on a personal level. Sometimes getting a great take has less to do with microphones and acoustics and much more to do with helping someone feel confident and excited about what they are doing.

At the end of the day, I want the artists I work with to leave the session with a sense of enthusiasm about their music and career and to know that we didn’t leave any possibility on the table while making their record. Really I think am just into helping people be the best version of themself.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
