Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrell Sass.

Terrell Sass

Hi Terrell, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Atlanta after a few years at a school called Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. When I moved to Atlanta, I began attending the Atlanta Institute of music and media. There, I practiced all day, went to class all night, then went out to jam sessions after class for a year straight, pretty much. I definitely took the networking side of things seriously during this time. Actually, I still do. But from there, I began to gain respect from certain musical directors and even producers. I ended up in Alabama with a friend of mine doing a session that ended up in the hands of Ludacris, Small World, DJ Drama, Pharrell, and The Clips. Then, more major artist started to inquire about who I was, and all of this session lead to me learning that I actually do have production and composition skills, so I begin on that craft, and I turned a drum session for the legendary Ms. Jennifer Holliday into a professional relationship in which I’m producing and composing for her! That process of turning drumming situations into production situations has never ceased since then!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are definitely obstacles I encountered. It’s never easy to gain respect as a musician, especially in a place I Atlanta where it is extremely populated with extremely talented musicians. So that was the initial block I encountered, then on the production side it became hard for me to get respect as a composer since everybody knew me as a drummer, so that was definitely an uphill battle, and I had to go above and beyond to show people that I was into serious composition and music production .

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a drummer, as well as a music producer and composer! I pretty much help an artist bring a vision to life musically even though the vision starts in their head. It’s my job to comprehend it and make the music say exactly what they’re thinking. I think one thing that sets me apart from a lot of people during this time is the fact that I still believe in keeping the music first. A lot of people worry about everything but the music, like how many followers you have, how many retweets you get, or how many likes you get on every post. But I firmly believe that you make an authentic piece of art that will be received by your intended crowd if you just take the time to put a little bit of thought into the actual marketing of it!

Any big plans?
I am definitely looking to pivot more into doing music that fits movies, commercials, television, and other mediums that are heavily consumed today. I would love to be known as the guide to call when Music supervisor needs the perfect song for their End Credits or for a scene in a movie. But I am also doing a lot of research on music supervision now, that’s definitely something that I would love to get into because on my journey. I’ve been blessed to meet so many extremely talented singers and songwriters that the world has yet to truly discover. So, finding material for me would not be hard at all to fit different mediums for their music!
