Community Highlights: Meet Brandon Smith of Baseballsmith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Smith.

Hi Brandon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was drafted by the Oakland A’s out of Roswell High School in 1991. After playing parts of 5 seasons with the A’s, Mets, and Independent baseball I retired to pursue developing athletes. I’ve worked with thousands of players over the past 34 years. Some have made it to the Big Leagues, Division 1 baseball and other levels of the game. However, my hope is that all the players and families I have worked with and am currently working with have experienced a greater sense of enjoyment from the game of baseball because of our time together. Baseball is very difficult. But it is also very simple. Helping players and parents to simplify the complexity of baseball into its simplest form is what I enjoy about training athletes. When a task is smaller and specific players can master it and move on with confidence to the next step. Not only does their confidence grow but their ability to problem solve does also. Players that can fail at the game of baseball but still have confidence because of their understanding of the game and the adjustments needed is an amazing thing to see in a young persons life. I also like helping parents navigate the ups and downs of youth baseball. There is a tremendous amount of pressure that youth sports adds to a family, whether it be financially, time commitment or the fear that parents aren’t doing enough for their kid. Helping parents understand that the time spent with their kids is fleeting and to have a big picture perspective often helps to ease the anxiety they experience as baseball parents.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Baseball has been a great business to be in over the years. Parents are very willing to pay for services that help their kids athletically and emotionally. The cause of most of my struggles have been self inflicted. I have made some good decisions on facility size and build out and I have made a couple bad decisions…trying to expand too fast.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Baseballsmith?
Baseballsmith is a training facility that has primarily worked with aspiring youth baseball players ages 6-18. However, recently we have added softball training to the mix. We have four instructors that do hitting, pitching, fielding and catching lessons. We also provide coaches clinics for local parks. College recruiting/advising is something that we have also recently added.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is seeing a kid do something that he couldnt do before he started working with me. Seeing his confidence grow in his ability to persevere and overcome an obstacle is what training athletes is all about.
