Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Murry.
Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always loved fashion. I did the bare minimum in school, but I always excelled in anything creative. I went to AIU for Fashion Marketing & Design, just so I could learn the business side. I worked in retail throughout and after college. I knew I wanted my own brand and website, but I had no idea where to start. I was also insecure and very intimidated by other brands, boutiques, etc. Fast forward to 2015, I was a visual merchandiser at a furniture store named Arhaus in Phipps Plaza. I ended up getting fired from that job after about a year. I moved back home with my parents to just start over. I was broke, so I had to file for unemployment. I used my first unemployment check to buy a dozen sunglasses and three purses. I used Big Cartel as a website host and posted the items. I’ve been doing Trashed Elegance ever since. I have ways to go, but thinking back to where I started makes me feel unstoppable.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road has been very unique, lol. My biggest struggle has been having patience and not comparing my business or journey to others. You have to tune out what others are doing. You have to understand that your journey is uniquely yours, the ups & downs. Sometimes, it feels like you’re not making any progress, but it only feels like that, because your progress may not look like someone else’s. Also, be open to how things will flow. Have your plan, but be open to how your goals play out. You can’t be the best without some storms. Embrace it and grow.
What should we know about Trashed Elegance? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
So, Trashed Elegance is an online based women’s website. I’m most proud of what my brand represents. My childhood was during the F.U.B.U. era. Anyone who’s familiar with F.U.B.U. knew that it was created for us by us. I want Trashed Elegance to have a similar message. There’s not enough representation of women of color in fashion. My purpose is to change that.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
I stand by staying true to your authentic self. I don’t believe in “fake it until you make it.” If you’re true to yourself, I promise you’ll make it. A lot of people go wrong trying to be someone else, that’s exhausting. Know yourself, love yourself, know your worth.
