Conversations with Ali Winston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Winston

Hi Ali, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Photography started as a hobby with my dad when I was little. He taught me how to use a SLR camera and we set up a darkroom in the bathroom. I always had a camera on me and loved photography as a hobby.
Then I had kids and photography went from a hobby to a passion. I wanted to capture every fleeting detail, every roll, every smile, each tooth that was coming in. I finally understood how quickly babies change and the need to have something to look back on. I started working with other moms to capture all the details that I didn’t want to forget on my own kids so that they, too, had art to cherish forever.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have a very optimistic outlook, so even the bumps along the way have felt like they were there for a reason. Starting and growing any business is hard, especially while raising little kids, but I’ve been fortunate to have a great support system around me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in working with families with young kids. From maternity through the toddler days and into school, I love getting to know the families I work with and watching them grow. I try to make photos as easy and fun as possible – it’s often a dreaded task, especially for dads. I take over the date and location planning, offer wardrobe for mom and kids, coordinate hair and makeup so mom can feel amazing, and create artwork so that the photos are seen in real life and not just on a screen. I’m a hands-on photographer, preferring calls and in-home meetings instead of emails so that nothing gets lost in translation and nothing gets left undone. I make sure everything is taken care of from start to finish – including hanging artwork. I love when moms are finally relaxed knowing that they can let go of a task and trust that it will be taken care of.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love Spring. I feel lighter on sunny days filled with green grass, blooming flowers, and a gentle cool breeze. I grew up in South Florida where there is mostly just summer, so when I moved to Atlanta my first Spring was life-changing. I still remember calling my mom and being amazed!
