Conversations with Demond Arnold

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demond Arnold

Hi Demond, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started with photography a long time ago, I would say probably middle school. I would buy disposable cameras and take random photos of my friends at school not knowing that later on I would become so passionate about it. When I graduated from high school I went to Troy University, Troy, Alabama where I majored in Graphic Design and minored in Advertising, my interest really grew during my time there. It grew so much that I decided to use photography in my Senior Thesis. I produced a book of poetry that included photos illustrating each poem. I was in love with taken photos and just coming up with themes and just figuring out how things worked. Fast forward to present day I am still growing and learning and loving every single moment of it.

I have been granted the chance to work with and be guided by great photographers such as Michael Moorer who is currently based in the Atlanta, GA area and Frederick Gordon who is based in Montgomery, AL both men have been a great source of information and wisdom and I am more than happy that they were placed in my path.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography itself isn’t much of an issue other than finding subject, it’s more so the things that come with life. For example; I have diabetes and a few years back I learned that I had to have surgery on my eyes due to Diabetic retinopathy which is something that attacks the blood vessels in the eyes. That was the scariest news I had every heard, not only because I had never had any type of surgery before, but because I didn’t know if I would ever be able to see my family again and if I would ever be able to take photos again.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a photographer I consider myself as a portrait photographer. I love taking photos of people and helping them see the beauty that they have. I love when I get the chance to shoot a person who normally doesn’t have their photos taken and they see the end result and they are pleased.

I am a portrait photographer and I love shadows so most of my images have a darker feel to them.

I would say I am known most for my black and white portraits. I love them so much. The shadows and light play just excites me every single time.

I am most proud of my ability to learn with each and every day. I never took any class on photography I was something that God has placed in my life and I am so grateful.

Something I feel that sets me apart from most is that I am willing to step outside the box and experiment, even if it means using myself as the subject.

How do you define success?
I would define success as going after something that I want and giving it my all and never quitting.
