Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Cecilia Ortiz
Hi Maria Cecilia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey as a small business photographer began a little after graduating high school in 2015. At the time, social media was developing quite rapidly, and I was always inspired by other creators that would post their work. Not too long after I decided to buy my first DSLR camera from a friend. I began doing my research and self-teaching myself everything that I needed to learn about photography. I never imagined something that started as a small hobby to turn into such an amazing journey. I see photography more than just a click of a button, it’s about building relationships and developing my talent.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a First-Generation Latina, I believe that when you want something to work for you there are no shortcuts, and you have to learn to work twice as hard. Starting my photography business and kicking off my career has not always been a smooth road for me. Coming from an immigrant background, my parents have always morally supported me which I am so grateful for. However, some of the struggles that I have faced was not always being able to have the financial help and proper guidance. While kicking off my photography business I also attended Georgia State University as a full-time student and was still working full time. Despite my difficult road, I graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor’s in Film and Media and a Minor in Marketing. When there are struggles in your journey, it makes you more passionate and grateful with how far along you have come.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a portrait photographer, I specialize in capturing families, lifestyle and brand. I also specialize in designing graphics for other small businesses. I am most proud of the amount of growth and talent that I have developed over the years. I am super grateful for the amount of support that I am surrounded with as well. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I am willing to take risks and be confident in the work that I provide for my clients.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe that taking risks allows you to grow out of your comfort zone. It allows you to believe in yourself even when it can be a scary process. I haven’t always been someone that was able to take risks, because I was stuck in the “what ifs” but I realized if I stuck with that mentality, I wouldn’t allow myself to see the potential of how far my journey could go. Some of the risks that I have taken was to start my small business from ground zero without anyone guiding or helping me. I know that with taking these risks I was going to have very long days and early mornings, but with putting in the over time, I knew that it would pay off in the long run.
