Conversations with Tiffany Barnes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Barnes.

Hi Tiffany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
One question I get asked frequently is what made you want to become a hairstylist. My first example was from my father owning his salon/barbershop in Bronx, NYC. As long as I can remember, it was one of the few business ventures my old man embarked on and still runs today. I entered 7th grade, I wanted more trendy styles. At this time, I lived in GA with my mother and siblings. I took it upon myself to recreate braids and sleek back ponytails id see from music videos on 106 and park. I became pretty nice with it so my mother gave me the duty of doing my younger siblings and myself hair. Junior year of high school I took a cosmetology course simply to have an easy class. After completing the cosmetology career path, my teacher pulled me aside and told me that I was a natural and should consider becoming a professional. Senior year came about and I sat down and thought about what I really enjoy doing and how college would play a part.

After reflecting on my father’s success I made up my mind to be like him. My folks were supportive of my career path and I went to hair school full time straight out of high school. Once I completed and became licensed I went to work at genies salon part of (Salon 124) to sharpen my skills mostly on color and cut. I worked there for a year before I relocated to Hi Texture salon. The demographic of that salon was Natural curly girls compared to straight hair at Geneis. I already enjoyed cutting but the techniques to shape curly girls is what I love to do most. Working at Hi Texture when I learned my niche. Teaching women to see beauty and what their hair is capable of doing is so rewarding. I worked there for three years. By my 25th bday, I reflected on what else I wanted for myself. I also wanted to be an example to my younger siblings that you can be your own boss. With that in mind, I choose to embark on my own summer of 2019. That Is when CRWN By Tiffany was created.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve been extremely blessed. I expected the worst and planned to start my cliental completely over. Instead, my clients have made this journey smooth. through my growing pains and the pandemic, they’ve always supported me and I am truly Thankful and blessed

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Curly (Natural) specialist stylist. Most ppl come to me to shape and safely color their curls. I will be becoming sisterloc certified over the summer. So the next thing for me is to color locs as well. Overall I promote healthy hair.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned how serious people are about their hair during covid. I had clients who would only leave their home to go to the grocery store and the salon to get their hair done lol.
