Conversations with William Christopher Scandrett

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Christopher Scandrett.

Hi William Christopher, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is William Christopher Scandrett and I’m the owner of EnviroBro, LLC. EnviroBro specializes in Holistic Education and Wellness through Urban/Raised Gardening and STEAM Education. Soon we will begin selling Crystal Necklaces to promote healing through affirmations and positive thinking.

EnviroBro builds small to medium-scale garden beds, raised gardens, and living walls for vertical farming and urban/suburban gardening that pushes the boundaries of sustainable, organic vegetable, flower, and herb agriculture. Rooted in science and steeped in innovation, our team is committed to building products that break new ground in sustainable DIY agriculture.

EnviroBro promotes STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education. The Adventures of Old Swifton Road is a saga of STEAM-based children books which reveal fun and inspiring stories through the eyes of Black and Brown American children in various socio-economic upbringings. Lee, a 7-year-old black girl from a cattle farm in Southern Georgia, goes on an incredible journey of archaeological discovery. While her mother is busy keeping the family business going, Lee, who is feeling ignored, sneaks outdoors with her notebook and magnifying glass to look for ‘fossils’ in the woods. What she discovers will completely blow her mind and historical records!

In addition to children’s books, organizations can partner with EnviroBro for in and out of school STEAM programming.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like with many organizations, 2020 was a difficult year for the company. With the closing of many businesses and schools, EnviroBro lost many clients and opportunities. After much debate, EnviroBro paused business until 2021. Now the company is back and better than ever.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most known for being an author, nature-enthusiast, soccer player, and gardener. My first book, “The Adventures of Old Swifton Road: Lee’s Incredible Journey,” set the bar for other STEAM-based children’s books to become more diverse and inclusive. The next installation of the sage, “Lee and the Mysterious Cave,” will be released later this fall.

Gardening became a hobby of mine at a young age, as I grew up planting with my Grandmother, Lee, who raised me. (She’s also the inspiration behind the children’s book series). My grandmother invested in my education and my love of nature, spending the little extra money she had to purchase encyclopedias and novels for me. I contribute this influence to my later accomplishments of obtaining a degree in Environmental Geosciences and eventually a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership.

I’m proud of the progress I’ve made, inspiring Black and Brown children from all socio-economic backgrounds to pursue STEAM interests, degrees, and potential careers. What sets me apart from other authors and business owners is that I was once a young black boy that had an interest in science but not many resources to foster that interest. More importantly, the characters in the books and on tv that were interested in nature didn’t look like me. I want to change that for the next generation and generations to come.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Atlanta because of the diversity and inclusiveness of the culture. You can be a poor Black boy from a farm and come to the city to follow your dreams and actually make it. I did. There are people here from all walks of life and Black and Brown professionals that want to equally see their people succeed. The only thing I dislike about Atlanta is the traffic.
