Today we’d like to introduce you to Doni Smoot.
Hi Doni, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been a creative and entrepreneur my entire life pretty much. After graduating, I began to pursue creative writing as a full-time career, combining those skills with copywriting in the digital marketing and SEO profession. However, my true passion has been my own intellectual and artistic expression in various mediums, whether that’s film, photographic, visually, or within the past five years—through the design field.
Currently, I’m working on a full-volume graphic novel for The Apeiros World Project, due in 2023!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The challenge for any soloprenuer is getting buy-in from others. I’m not a person who suffers from self-doubt or imposter syndrome—but getting others to believe in and support a vision that, for the moment, exists only in your head and heart; rather than being tangible for others to experience is often the biggest obstacle besides any financial or resource limitations that one can face.
Often the challenge is myself. My own creativity. My own expressive limitations. How do I convey this artistic and meaningful concept so that others may find value; that’s the day-to-day challenge.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What sets me apart is understanding and utilizing the synthesis between art x commerce. Knowing how to monetize one’s passion is the lifeblood of today’s creator economy and digital renaissance. Coming from a sales and marketing background in my adulthood coupled with a 90s upbringing of everything pop culture inevitably led me to pursuing a career in the creator economy. Right now, I’m a full-time UX Writer but heavily involved in building an animation production studio.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I’m thankful to God for being blessed with my insights, perspectives, and life experiences. They all made me who I am and hopefully, I can impart those lessons into others.
Walt Disney. Steve Jobs. Ed Catmull. George Lucas. Lupe Fiasco. Kanye West. Michael Crichton. Video games. Ancient and world history—these and many other creators, companies, brands, stories have all left and imparted some sort of lesson and guidance to me in my life and continue to shape it.
Also to my mentor Nick, who taught me the fundamentals of business. My partner in crime Angelica, close business friends Bryan & Reghan, all my bros (too many to name, but you know who you are). These people and more help me and always keep me grounded. I’m thankful and inspired.
