Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosegoldltd.
We’re rosegoldltd, an art collective that’s been running strong for over three years now. We’ve got a lot of friends that we like to collab with, but at the core, rosegold is six people: Son Boro, Grito el Sancho, YUNGMAYANPRINCE, Yorrsche, SZRE & BN7NE. A little backstory – The collective started in Lawrenceville with Grito, Yorrshe, & YMP circa 2017, and soon afterwards SZRE was adopted. Completely by chance, a random housing assignment matched Boro in the same home as Szre in Home Park, a neighborhood in West Midtown. Boro had just moved to Atlanta from Birmingham (where he used to work with BN7NE) with the explicit goal to make music, so the assimilation into rosegold was easy. After spending some time together, the crew moved to another house in West Midtown and established home base: Rancho de Rosie, Rosie HQ. We had a goal in mind, get out a tape. One bedroom of this place was a completely dedicated music studio that would be occupied during all times of the day, and the doors would be always open for us and our friends to record in.
This was around fall 2018, during this time we crafted The Rosie Tapes, Vol. 1. Since then, Grito, YMP, and SZRE have also dropped solo tapes. During this time, all of our focus that wasn’t dedicated to music was dedicated to the Garden Party, a home show that featured art, DJ sets, and musical performances by us and our friends. Since our first one in 2018, we’ve had 3 of these Garden Parties, and anyone who knows us knows how much effort goes into these shows. We wanted to make these shows more memorable than any other house party you could find in the city: an intimate concert experience with an advanced lighting & sound setup mashed with an art show that covers the walls of the house. Each one being bigger than the last, it’s what we became known for around our parts. We’d throw these shows every six months and were planning on having our 4th one last spring alongside the release of our 2nd collab album, “The Rosie Tapes, Vol. 2.” We wrote the majority of the album during a cabin excursion at the beginning of 2020; everything seemed to be falling into place. However, the pandemic stalled our momentum and these plans didn’t pan out the way we envisioned.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, we’ve been able to work together fairly well and grow as a collective. As with most rising artists, there’s always the challenge of trying to financially support your creative career. All members are currently juggling work, school, and/or family alongside their creative pursuits, so it’s a constant grind until we can live off our work. Additionally, the current COVID-19 pandemic has provided its own set of challenges. Due to the pandemic, we were forced to move out of our creative house, sending each artist on their own path for the time being. As a result, the productivity of the collective as a whole has declined due to not having the same access to each other and the same creative environment.
On top of this, BN7NE still lives in Birmingham, so there are only a handful of opportunities for all of us to get together in person these days. Additionally, since a lot of our networking was done at live events, we’ve been unable to interact with other creatives in the city and as a result, have not been able to get the exposure that we would like. This also extends to our ability to host parties, as much of our exposure to the local scene came from hosting the Garden Parties. Even with these hardships, we continue to work hard to grow as a collective and individual artists. One solution all of this (especially the lack of Garden Parties and performing in general) was the making of “‘ROSEGOLD’ LIVE! In Concert,” a virtual concert in which we performed original music alongside matching visuals. We created this 45 minute show as a passion project to re-inspire ourselves to finish everything that’s been stalled this year and to remind our friends and followers that we’re still out here kickin’ it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We’ve released multiple projects as a collective so far, including: “The Rosie Tapes”, “ALGAE” an EP by Grito El Sancho, “FM” an EP by YUNGMAYANPRINCE, and SZRE’s self-titled EP. Besides this, the group works on creating their own visual art for most of their releases. This includes cover art, press photos, music videos, visualizers, etc. “Look Both Ways” was our first music video for our project “The Rosie Tapes, Vol. 1” and was shot and edited by our friends at Hot Shoe Media. Also, on our YouTube you can find a video for our song “Watch As I Move”, which was shot and edited by our friend Afro Nostalgia at the most recent Garden Party in November 2019. Our live show specifically was quite the undertaking to create. We took inspiration from online festivals hosted this year in lieu of the pandemic, specifically events like Porter Robinson’s “Secret Sky” and A. G. Cook’s “Appleville”.
Several months went into putting this together, with SZRE working on visual editing (with the help of friend George Bermudez [Cubecudi]) and Boro working on the audio mixing. Overall, our members try to express themselves creatively in more ways than just through music. Whether it being through visual art, fashion, our events, and event marketing, we’re always looking for more ways to stand out. Planned musical projects in the future include: “The Rosie Tapes 2”, “Son Boro Radio”, “Protozoa” -an EP by Grito El Sancho, “MAL7GNANT” – A Project by BN7NE.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
As “struggling” artists, our whole lifestyle is essentially a risk. We sacrifice school, work, and social standings in order to dedicate time to our passion, with the possibility of failure (or success) always on the horizon. It’s like being in the dark about the future cause you never know what obstacles you’re going to face along your journey, but at the same time being certain of it, knowing this would all lead to success one day. Besides this, some of our biggest risks come from the events we put together. For each event, we spend hundreds of dollars from our own pockets in order to provide an environment with immersive decorations, great quality sound and lighting, professional photography, and entertainment for our guests. Since we do not charge for these events, it’s always a gamble whether or not the money we put into all of this would be worth it. At the end of the day, however, we find it to be well worth it, both for the experience and the exposure, and honestly just because it’s fun.
