Exploring Life & Business with Kheru Defontes El of The healers University/ The Healers U

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kheru Defontes El

Hi Kheru, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into health, wellness, and spirituality began when I realized I no longer wanted to live in sickness. Throughout my childhood and teenage years, I struggled with constant pain, severe toothaches, debilitating menstrual cramps that often landed me in the hospital, and deep-rooted trauma. By the time I was 18, I made a vow to never return to the hospital again. That was the turning point—I began researching natural alternatives and ways to regain control of my life. I discovered that much of my pain stemmed from poor diet, unresolved trauma, and a lack of essential nutrients. As I healed, people started noticing the transformation and sought out my guidance. This led me to become a birth worker, where I helped women not only give birth but also heal through their own journeys.

As I continued my work, I realized that brown women, in particular, needed more than just support during their birthing experiences—they needed natural remedies for mental health, womb issues, severe stress, high blood pressure, and more. This realization led me to herbal medicine. I went on to study and become trained in herbalism, as well as a holistic counselor. It became clear to me that my true role in the community was one of “social work”—helping individuals heal, not just physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well.

From there, the stories got deeper. I started diving further into my spirituality to understand how generational curses work and learning about ancestral karma. I began exploring the ways in which old habits and cycles are passed down through generations and how they continue to shape the lives we live today. This journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth led me to clear these old patterns, helping myself and others break free from the chains of inherited trauma and live more empowered, healed lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth ride? Absolutely not. It’s been a rewarding journey, but far from easy. This work isn’t simple. The energy required to truly endure and grow in this space comes from deep self-love, and most people struggle to put in that kind of effort on such a radical level. Many of us don’t believe in ourselves enough. Some have never witnessed real transformation in the people around them, so it can be hard to set that standard for others. There are also those who are cloaked in fear, constantly worried about how they’re perceived. Teaching people to set healthier boundaries is tough, too. It’s challenging to stay committed to your own path while watching others struggle, especially when they’re looking for a quick fix—believing there’s a potion or pill that will make everything better. I’ve encountered so much—both good and bad—in this work, from people of all walks of life: young, old, rich, poor, all seeking healing for different reasons. The truth that comes with healing isn’t always easy to face, but you have to be ready to accept it when it comes.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Yes, my advice is to study and trust the process. Don’t look for a mentor- attract one. When the student is ready the teacher will appear.
