Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Scott of Loc Em Up Products

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Scott.

Hi Melissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 1998, I started doing locs as Melissa’s Creations what began as a way to support my family became my passion and purpose. I moved to Atlanta on New Year’s Eve 2004 to rebuild my life and grow my gift. Over time, I built Loc Em Up Products, a holistic hair and skin brand created in 2011 to heal the community one scalp at a time. From working behind the chair to pitching in Walmart’s Open Call, I turned struggle into strategy and passion into purpose.

Today, I’m the founder of Loc Em Up Products, Diamond Salon Suites, serving and inspiring others to believe that no matter where you start, you can build your dream from the ground up.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth. I’ve faced financial hardship, self-doubt, and moments where I almost gave up. As a single mother trying to build a business from scratch, there were times when I had to choose between paying bills or buying supplies to keep my dream alive. I didn’t have investors, just faith, consistency, and a deep belief that my purpose was bigger than my problems.

There were setbacks — people who didn’t believe in me, partnerships that fell through, and seasons where I had to start over more than once. But every challenge taught me something: how to stand on faith, trust my vision, and keep building even when no one was clapping. Those struggles shaped the woman and entrepreneur I am today — resilient, resourceful, and rooted in purpose.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Loc Em Up Products?
Loc Em Up Products is a holistic hair and skin care brand created to heal the community one scalp at a time. What started behind the chair as a loctician’s passion has grown into a full manufacturing brand that focuses on residue-free, build-up-free, natural products designed for locs, twists, and textured hair.

We specialize in scalp health, moisture retention, and growth stimulation using natural oils, herbs, and vitamins that nourish from root to tip. Our signature products — including the Loc & Twist Locking Solution, New Edgz Hair & Beard Growth Oil, Thirsty Loc Moisturizing Oil, Loc Refresher Spray, and Silk Protein Conditioner — are made with care, culture, and consistency.

What sets us apart is our commitment to education, culture, and community. We don’t just sell products — we teach people how to properly care for their locs and scalp, empowering them to embrace their natural crown with confidence.

We’re proud to have served over 55,000 clients in person, been selected to pitch at Walmart’s Open Call, and built our own Loc Em Up Lab and Showroom where we manufacture, teach, and distribute our products.

Loc Em Up Products is more than a brand — it’s a movement of holistic healing, cultural pride, and generational impact.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
There are so many ways to collaborate and grow with Loc Em Up Products. We partner with beauty supply stores, salons, barbers, and holistic wellness brands who want to carry or private-label our products. I also love working with creators, educators, and community leaders who align with our mission of holistic hair care, self-love, and cultural empowerment.

Support can look like purchasing Loc Em Up Products, booking a wholesale or private label consultation, or simply sharing our story to help us reach more people who need natural, build-up-free solutions for their hair and skin.

We also welcome brand collaborations, retail partnerships, and community events that align with our purpose — healing the community one scalp at a time.
