Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Lewis
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved to take pictures and play dress up ever since I was a little girl. I really knew I wanted to start modeling around the time America’s Next Top Model came out. From there, I just went to the first huge casting call I heard about after begging my mom. I was signed on a two year contract at 15 which was a really eye opening experience. I eventually let my contract expire and pursued college instead. I chose to go to Fort Valley State University where I ended up joining the modeling troupe. Royal Elite Modeling Troupe was truly a God’s send to me at the time I first encountered it. The people I met, the lessons I learned, and the confidence I built taught me that as long as I put my all into what I’m doing and be my full self (not trying to imitate anyone, but authentically me) no one could stop me. I was able to work on my walk, become less awkward around new people, and to pose in different styles. It truly helped me become the person I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Things were not always smooth. Along the way I was told I was too skinny to model for certain brands, too tall to fit any of the outfits, or that I just flat out wasn’t what they were looking for. It did take a toll on my self esteem after a while and I did have to take a break from everything just to pull myself back together mentally. Honestly though, I wouldn’t change any of the trials because I wouldn’t have learned the lessons that I did.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a published runway and print model. I have walked in runway shows including Bronner Brother’s Hair Show, NYC small boutique fashion week, Paris small boutique fashion week, etc, I feel like the most memorable experiences so far would be just having the chance to just be around so many genuinely talented, blessed, and humble people. The Bronner Brothers Hair Show is always something I look forward to being apart of. My first battle there is probably my favorite because at that point in time I was still really scared to just give my all in front of that large of a crowd in fear of being judged but I had to. In that moment I learned not only was I capable but other people felt like I was enough as well. It was a major mental shift for me. I think with the times we are in now the biggest challenges I’ve faced is when I really stand ten toes down on my boundaries. I refuse to be just another naked girl out here just taking pictures and calling it fashion and I also know how to stay in my lane. I’m working towards making my way into high fashion/editorial type rooms and every event does not give that. I have learned that it is a time to say no. That has led to not walking in shows and not being in photo shoots, but that’s ok. I understand that everything is not meant for me, but the things that are usually are worth the wait.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I would say be mindful of everything. It’s a level of decorum that exist even when no one specifically says it our loud. Atlanta has taught me to be able to adapt to any and every situation. I love being from Atlanta just because I’ve been able to encounter people that walk in so many walks of life and it’s become beneficial because the same applies when networking at different events. I believe I carry a certain bit of southern hospitality as well. I try to give the best impression I can the first time I meet anyone because I also understand that tomorrow is not promised. I put my best foot forward, but I also remain myself.
